Society & Encino Chamber join forces

David Fields, executive director of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul's Council of Los Angeles, spoke to members of the Encino Chamber of Commerce on Tuesday, highlighting the Society's local charitable programs.

David proudly spoke - through a PowerPoint presentation - how the Society's programs are helping to change lives in a tough economy, and how members of the chamber can help by simply donating their tax-deductible usable household goods, vehicles and/or financial gifts.

David was presented a new member's plaque, as it was the Society's first meeting as a member of the Encino Chamber of Commerce.

Thank you Encino Chamber for making St. Vincent de Paul feel so welcomed.

Shopping SVdP Thrift Stores impact lives locally!

St. Vincent de Paul's thrift stores in Los Angeles, Long Beach and Oxnard sell usable donated items, which are picked up free of charge throughout the year to help fund the Society's various local charitable programs.

Approximately 215,000 individuals visited the stores last fiscal year. The value of clothing, furniture and other household donations collected was $2.8 million. Revenue received from sales was more than $3.9 million.

In part, the donations helped shoppers on fixed incomes, assisted more than 2,000 children, women and men in extreme-need through a St. Vincent de Paul supported free-distribution program and sustained jobs for 140 employees in tough economic times.

"Being a single mother of five children, ages 2-10, and having a $9 an hour job, the St. Vincent de Paul store helps me and my children very much. Everything in the store is reasonably priced, which helps my budget. It allows me to get my children clothes, furniture in their room, toys to play with and even a vehicle (to that, my son says 'woohoo...no more walking to school')."
