Circle V Ranch Camp Open House is a hit! Send your child to Summer Camp
The Society's Circle V Ranch Camp recently held its Open House to give families a sneak preview of what children can expect during summer camp this year. Circle V Ranch booth is a hit at Kids Expo in Santa Barbara
Fun was had by hundreds of families at the Circle V Ranch Camp booth last Saturday at the Kids Expo in Santa Barbara (La Cumbre Plaza). Besides handing out flyers about the upcoming summer camp season, a popular activity was held at the booth - making pine cone bird feeders just like campers do at Circle V Ranch Camp. The activity was a huge hit for not only the children, but for the parents and grandparents.

Summer is calling...
Summer is right around the corner! And that means summer camp at beautiful Circle V Ranch Camp - operated by the Society of St. Vincent de Paul's Council of Los Angeles - in the Los Padres National Forest above Santa Barbara.
For campers who have attended Circle V Ranch during the past couple years, expect to see a postcard in the mail soon about this year's camp season. For those interested in finding our more information about the Society's camp, please call 323-224-6213 or 805-688-5252.
Here are the camp sessions and themes for 2012:
* Session 1: June 27-July 2 = PIRATES ADVENTURE WEEK: The Pirates of Circle V need you, as you and your group build a real life ship to sail on the Circle V seas!
* Session 2: July 6-11 = MVP WEEK “SPORTS EXTRAVAGANZA”: Includes all your favorite sports activities. Everyone is a winner at Circle V!
* Session 3: July 11-16 = LOST IN SPACE WEEK: Travel to Planet Circle V as we discover other planets and faraway lands. It will be a “Star Wars Adventure”.
* Session 4: July 18-23 = INTERNATIONAL WEEK: With Flutes Across the World, it's a celebration of nations with all your favorite camp activities and good old- fashioned fun!
* Session 5: July 23-28 = KNIGHTS and PRINCESSES of the ROUND TABLE: Are you ready to be a Knight or Princess at King Arthur’s annual feast and Renaissance Faire?
* Session 6: July 31-August 5 = CARNIVAL WEEK: Old-fashioned fun with all your favorite carnival games!
* Session 7: August 5-10 = CIRCLE V IDOL “TALENT SHOW": Lights, camera, action! Who will be crowned the Circle V Idol of 2012?
* Session 8: August 11-16 = SUPER HERO WEEK: Bring your cape and superpowers as we protect the magical Kingdom of Circle V!

Volunteers still needed in Los Angeles, Ventura and Santa Barbara Counties to help those in need
The Society of St. Vincent de Paul held a 'Volunteer Recruitment Fair' on Saturday, attracting new volunteers to help carry on the Society's outreach in the counties of Los Angeles,Ventura and Santa Barbara.
Additional volunteers, 18 years and older, are needed, though, in a region still hurting from a difficult economy - the worst since the Great Depression.
Won't you please help the Society help others? Assistance is needed at the Society's three thrift stores in Los Angeles, Long Beach and Oxnard. Mentors are also needed at St. Vincent de Paul's Cardinal Manning Center (shelter) in downtown Los Angeles.

Did you know?
St. Vincent de Paul's impact has been felt throughout the world for generations. One shining example is DePaul University , a private institution of higher education and research in Chicago, Illinois. It was founded by the Vincentians in 1898, and is named after the Society's 17th century French priest, who valued philanthropy.
Vincentians are volunteers from all backgrounds of life who help improve the quality of life for thousands of individuals through various acts of charity during the year. Locally, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul's Council of Los Angeles has close to 2,000 Vincentians who serve the homeless and working poor in the counties of Los Angeles, Ventura and Santa Barbara.

Words of Society's founder still ring true today for SVdP's outreach
What sets the Society of St. Vincent de Paul a part from other charitable organizations is its home visits from the Society's close to 2,000 year-round 'Vincentian' volunteers in the counties of Los Angeles, Ventura and Santa Barbara. The word home doesn't always mean a residence, though. It sometimes means a car parked alongside a street, a person living in cardboard box under a bridge, etc.
The following are quotes from the Society's founder, Blessed Frédéric Ozanam (1813-1853), that still hold true today in St. Vincent de Paul's outreach to ALL people:
“Let us do without hesitation whatever good lies at our hands”.
“Yours must be a work of love, of kindness, you must give your time, your talents, yourselves”.
“We must do what is agreeable to God. We must do what Our Lord Jesus Christ did when preaching the Gospel. Let us go to the poor. Let us learn of Him”.
“Knowledge of the poor and needy is not gained by pouring over books or in discussions with politicians, but by visiting the slums where they live, sitting by the bedside of the dying, feeling the cold they feel and learning from their lips the causes of their woes”.
