The Safety Net They Needed

Chinwe, her daughter, and Vincentians Phil and Angella

SVdPLA’s volunteers Phil and Angella Wijmer met Chinwe when she was just 24, raising and supporting a 4-year-old daughter on her own and faced with the constant fear of losing her place to live. She worked at the local school district, but struggled to keep up with a growing pile of bills.

When Phil and Angella heard Chinwe’s story, they brought her to their St. Vincent de Paul Conference of Charity. The group’s first step was to provide Chinwe with enough money to make rent; the next was to help her become self-sufficient by addressing the root of the problem.

“They provided me with rental assistance, and then they helped with food, gas, and emotional support when I needed somebody to talk to,” she said. “I spoke with Angella a lot over the phone and through email. I could call her and email her anytime.”

Phil and Angella assisted Chinwe in how to budget. Chinwe’s job gave her a raise and increased her hours. She now has the foundation for her family’s bright future.
