Summer Fun for Heartbroken Child

Luis, at age seven, was abandoned by his mother as a young child. His father abused Luis, once trying to throw him out of a moving car. After his father was put in jail for the abuse, Luis’ grandparents moved into their inner-city home. His grandparents worried about the heartbroken child. His grandparents heard about the Society’s Circle V Ranch Camp. The Society and a social service agency picked up the tab. Luis thrived under the unconditional love and faith showered on him by the camp counselors. “This is the best summer I’ve ever had!” Luis beamed.
“Practice humility and patience.”
–St. Vincent de Paul

"Practica la humildad y la paciencia."
San Vicente de Paúl

God of Mercy,
May your breath flow through us as patience in serving our brothers and sisters,
a reflection of your love and understanding for all your creation.

“Humility is such a broad virtue, but so difficult and necessary, that we can’t reflect on it enough.
It’s the virtue of Jesus Christ, of his holy Mother, of the greatest of saints, and, in a word,
it the virtue of Missioners.”
–St.

Dear Christ the Servant.
As we go out to bring your love to your people in need,
may it be with a heart-felt humility born of love.

Circle V Flutes for the World

Campers at the Circle V Ranch Camp in Santa Barbara County spent their day on Thursday making folk-style flutes.
Each camper got to make two flutes out of California bamboo. They get to keep one and they will send the other flute to a child in the Philippines, who may have never heard or seen a flute.
Campers decorate the instrument and can write notes to send in the flute before they're shipped off.
In the program's seven year history, more than 10,000 flutes were created.
"I tell our students here in camp this year that it's not just a flute, it's a symbol of hope; it's a symbol of outreach, of caring, that as American children reach out to other parts of the world it can reflect who we are as Americans," said John Keretzke, Flutes Around the World Director.
Zeretzke will deliver the flutes, himself, in January.

"I beg Our Lord that in his goodness he may animate you with his true Spirit."

Lord, your love is so great it extends beyond all boundaries of human understanding.
Enkindle in me a great desire to spread your kingdom to all those with whom I come in contact today.

A memorable day at Space Camp | KCBX

This week, Travel Correspondent Tom Wilmer went to summer camp at The Circle V Ranch Camp.

Founded in 1945 by the Society of St. Vincent de Paul Council of Los Angeles, the camp is celebrating its 70th Anniversary. Since 1990, the camp has been tucked in a dreamy canyon just a mile up a winding gravel road just off Highway 145, close to the Lake Cachuma Park entrance in Santa Barbara County. The camp adventure coincided with a special Lost in Space Week. NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratories scientist, Tom Nolan was a camper at Circle V back in the early 1960s and he was on hand the day of our visit along with seven of his research-associates from JPL, USC, California Science Center, and Huntington High Science Department. The scientists shared their scientific research and exploration of the universe with the campers—who engaged in hands-on-science where they took the controls of remotely operated vehicles to plumb the aquatic depths of the swimming pool…They learned about the Mars rovers and robots, and built and launched their own rockets. Join correspondent, Tom Wilmer for a most memorable day at Circle V’s Camp--Space Camp that is.

"Allow yourself to be led by His fatherly love,
for He does love us and is far from rejecting a righteous man;
He will not even abandon a wicked man who hopes in his mercy."

pues El si nos ama y no rechazará a un hombre/mujer honrado/a;

Heavenly Father, the only thing I can be sure of is your love for me.
Protect me and lead me as I go about my day.

St. Vincent de Paul Hosts Special Olympians With Good Old American Food

The St. Vincent de Paul Society hosted 97 Special Olympians July 22nd for an “all American hamburger” dinner and live deejay dance.
Los Angeles is hosting the Special Olympics World Games for over 6,500 athletes from 165 countries through Aug. 2nd. The games kicked off July 25th.
The athletes have been competing in 25 different events at venues throughout Los Angeles including at USC and UCLA, where some of the athletes are housed.
St. Vincent’s own event took place at its thrift store located at 210 North Ave. 21.
According to St. Vincent spokesperson Chris Sariego, the non- profit wanted to honor the Olympians who, he said, “are models of courage, perseverance, dedication and goodwill.”

A Positive Change for Tyler

11 year old Tyler was so accustomed to the gangs, drugs, and violence at home that he felt displaced at St. Vincent de Paul’s Circle V Ranch Camp. “I am not used to singing and playing and everyone being so happy,” he said to Juan, his camp counselor. Tyler wanted to go back to his group home where he lived with his brother after their dad committed suicide and their mom was imprisoned. Juan managed to convince Tyler to give the camp a chance, and all the counselors made sure he felt welcome. Over the next week, little by little, Tyler made friends, took an interest in painting and archery, participated in the talent show, played at the pool, and just had fun. Never before had he been to the mountains, hiked in the forest, seen a clear view of the stars, or said a prayer of thanks before a meal. The camp helped him recover hope. On the last day, tears filled Tyler’s eyes as he told Juan good-bye. “I’ll miss this place,” he said, “I wish I could stay, but I’ll be back next summer!”

“We do not put faith in a man because he is learned,
but we esteem and love him because he is good."

Knowledge without integrity isn't worth very much.
Lord, keep this truth ever before me.

Sabiduría sin integridad no vale realmente mucho.
Señor, mantén esta verdad siempre ante mí.
