More than 100 Vincentian volunteers came to the General Meeting for the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, Council of Los Angeles Sunday, Oct. 26, 2014 at St. Augustine Catholic Church in Culver City. Attendees were encouraged to dress as saints and prizes were distributed for best costumes. A Day of the Dead altar was constructed and attendees brought photographs of deceased loved ones. Thanks to St. Augustine’s Conference of Charity for hosting this nice event.

Backpacks loaded with school supplies were presented to 50 low-income Catholic school children by the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, Council of Los Angeles and the Specialty Family Foundation Catholic Schools Consortium October 10, 2014 at the Los Angeles River Center & Gardens. Kevin Baxter, Ph.D., Superintendent of Elementary Schools for the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, extolled the virtues of a Catholic education. The students were praised by Specialty Family Foundation’s chair and president, Deb Estes, and the society’s executive director, David Fields, for being hand-picked by their school principals to receive the backpacks. Society president Claire Padama told the children each pack also had a prayer book and scapular. “I hope you will use them!” she said.

A Lincoln Heights Chamber of Commerce Mixer was held for 30 chamber members at the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, Council of Los Angeles’ L.A. thrift store October 9, 2014. Society deputy executive director David Garcia is on the board of the Lincoln Heights Chamber and spearheaded this well-received community event. Thanks to everyone in the chamber who joined us!

Over 200 Vincentians attended the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, Council of Los Angeles Spiritual Retreat October 4, 2014 at the De Paul Center in Montebello. The retreat offered talks in English by Sr. Paule Freeburg, D.C. and Fr. Perry Henry, C.M. Talks in Spanish were provided by Fr. Pedro Villarroya, C.M. Fruit baskets were presented to our speakers in thanks by Society board president Claire Padama.
