What is Charity?

"You will find out that Charity is a heavy burden to carry, heavier than the kettle of soup and the full basket. But you will keep your gentleness and your smile. It is not enough to give soup and bread. This the rich can do. You are the servant of the poor, always smiling and good-humored. They are your masters, terribly sensitive and exacting master you will see. And the uglier and the dirtier they will be, the more unjust and insulting, the more love you must give them. It is only for your love alone that the poor will forgive you the bread you give to them."

Long Beach SVdP & WESCA join forces to clean local region

For the second time in eight months, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul's Thrift Store in Long Beach on Saturday partnered with WESCA (West East Side Community Association)for a special cleanup of the city's 4th District. Close to 40 volunteers, including those from St. Vincent de Paul, participated in this monthly event.

The Society also provided a truck to help pick up nearly two tons of trash from local alleys and streets. Some usable items were retrieved, which were donated to St. Vincent de Paul. Following the event, the volunteers were treated to a BBQ on the patio of the Society's store at 2750 Pacific Coast Highway (corner of PCH and Temple).

"It went very well. As a member of this community, we enjoy working with WESCA and others to help keep our region clean," said Latisha Rosales, manager of the Society's Long Beach facility. "After all, we're all in this together."

Volunteers are being sought to help each month. Students can also volunteer their time in exchange for community service hours. Information: Griselda Barba-Perez at 562-570-8281 or griselda.perez@longbeach.gov.

This could be you

Been a while since you've visited St. Vincent de Paul's thrift stores in Los Angeles, Long Beach or Oxnard? Not sure of the clothing you'll find at everyday low prices? Think it may not be up to par with what you can find at retail stores? Check out this customer and what she found at St. Vincent de Paul. And she purchased the entire set (silk jacket, brocade skirt, blouse and pumps) for less than $25. The skirt was a new item she found at St. Vincent de Paul from Forever 21.

Simultaneoulsy, as she was saving money on this nice outfit, proceeds from her sale (and others) helped support the Society's local charitable services for children, women and men! A win-win situation.

Isn't it time you visit St. Vincent de Paul's stores? For store locations and directions, go to the right side of this blog.

The Society in the Community

If you attended the Olde Tyme Flea Market at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena on Sunday, you saw the Society of St. Vincent de Paul's information booth at the main gate beneath the famed Rose Bowl sign.

SVdP Store Director Tony Terrazas and Store Supervisor Isidro Casas manned the booth and walked around the Rose Bowl grounds distributing 2,500 Society pens and 1,500 donation magnets to customers and vendors alike.

"I think people noticed us. I was really happy," said Tony. "There were many people in attendance and we took advantage of the time we were there."

The flea market, which is held the second Sunday of every month, will see the Society there again in May. This time, besides having general information about the Society, Tony will also have small items for sale from the thrift stores.

On Sunday, April 17, St. Vincent de Paul will be at the Long Beach Outdoor Antique & Collectible Market at Veterans Stadium, 4901 E. Conant St., 90808. SVdP will be located in the blue space from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. with free Society pens and donation magnets, as well as jewelery for sale.

Information: 323-224-6291.
