Winter Shelter Tour Puts Face on Homelessness

The Society of St. Vincent de Paul recently held a special tour called 'Gimme Shelter II' at the Ventura National Guard Armoury, site of the Society's emergency winter shelter in West Ventura County.

Individuals and prospective members of the Friends of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul visited the shelter to get a first-hands look at the day-to-day operation. The shelter is a safe haven for more than 100 individuals nightly during the winter. Following the visit, the group went next door to Barber Volkswagen where they spoke with community leaders.

David Fields, executive director of the Society, also spoke about St. Vincent de Paul's thoughts on additional programs to assist the homeless in the cities of Ventura and Oxnard.

Food 4 Less, the nation’s largest price-impact supermarket chain, invites customers to help support local food banks and families in need through a special fund-raising campaign that kicked off November 6. The Society of St. Vincent de Paul's Council of Los Angeles is a recipient of this collection drive.

Food 4 Less and Foods Co customers and team members can support food banks in their community through the supermarket chain’s nonprofit arm, The Food 4 Less/Foods Co Fund, by donating their spare change in collection canisters located at the checkstands in Food 4 Less stores in Southern California, southern Nevada and greater Chicago, and at Foods Co supermarkets in Central and Northern California. The fundraising campaign will run from November 6, 2011 through January 28, 2012. Monies collected will be donated to food banks and hunger relief organizations in the communities served by Food 4 Less and Foods Co in California, southern Nevada, and the greater Chicago area.

“Food 4 Less has a firm commitment to give back to the communities that our customers and team members call home,” said Bryan Kaltenbach, president of Food 4 Less/Foods Co. “Through our ‘Bringing Hope to the Table’ checkstand fundraising campaign, our customers and team members can drive funds to local food banks to help hungry families who are our neighbors.”

The checkstand fundraising program is part of Food 4 Less’ “Bringing Hope to the Table” initiative that is working to reduce hunger in local communities. In addition to the checkstand fundraiser, the “Bringing Hope to the Table” initiative includes an annual cause marketing partnership with Feeding America that generated more than $200,000 for Feeding America-affiliated food banks this year.

Food 4 Less’ ongoing commitment to bring as much food as possible to hungry families also includes our company-wide Perishables Donations Partnership (PDP) program. The program allows fresh, wholesome food such as meat, produce and dairy products to be donated directly from Food 4 Less and Foods Co stores to local food banks that are able to safely handle perishable foods.

Food 4 Less has donated more than 560,000 pounds of perishable foods to food banks this year. This represents more than 400,000 meals for hungry families.

Society helps family on Animal Planet's 'Pit Bulls and Parolees'

The Society of St. Vincent de Paul's Council of Los Angeles was seen nationally on Animal Planet's 'Pit Bulls and Parolees' last weekend helping a family whose home was destroyed by a fire.

The family, who had to temporarily give up their pit bull to the tv show's featured family and the ranch they operate for parolees and abandoned pit bulls, lost their household items and another pet to the devastating fire.

Upon finding a new apartment in Long Beach that would allow pit bulls, the family and the pet were reunited. Due to finances, though, the family lacked household furnishings. The Society helped with that need, including a gift-wrapped bone for the dog.

This is just one example of how the Society helps those in need throughout the year - every year. No Act of Charity is Foreign to the Society.

Today, January 4, is the Feast Day of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, founder of the Sisters of Charity, whose rule is based upon that of the Daughters of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul, and who was the first native-born citizen of the U.S. to be canonized as a saint. Details of her interesting life, from a young woman born and raised in a devout, well-to-do Episcopalian family, to her loving marriage, life as a widow and devoted mother, to her conversion to Catholicism and formation as a Vincentian, may be found by visiting the Vincentian Family web site’s VincentWiki page at http://famvin.org/wiki/Elizabeth_Ann_Seton.

Society's young people help ring in new year at Cardinal Manning Center

Thanks to St. Vincent de Paul's Cal State LA-John Paul II Conference (East LA), Our Lady of the Rosary of Talpa Young Adult Conference (Boyle Heights) and Whittier High School for decorating, serving dinner and having a "New Year's countdown" and singing Auld Lang Syne to individuals at the Society's Cardinal Manning Center (shelter) in downtown LA on December 31.

Special kudos to Larry Ballesteros, president of the Cal State LA-John Paul II Conference, for organizing the event; Annette and Luis Lopez, vice president and spiritual advisor, respectively, of Our Lady of the Rosary of Talpa Young Adult Conference, for their contributions; and Joan Sotiros, director of the Cardinal Manning Center, for the tamales.

I feel humbled by the young 'Vincentians' volunteers and their good cheer and generosity, and blessed to end the year with them.

Volunteer at SVdP's shelter in Skid Row displays artistic ability

James Spencer, a volunteer at the Society of St. Vincent de Paul's Cardinal Manning Center (CMC), helped brighten Christmas for the homeless at the shelter by creating a special holiday scene.

The drawings you see here are located in the men's section of the shelter. Spencer said he created this piece simply because he wanted the men "to have a Merry Christmas."

Santa Claus & St. Vincent de Paul brighten Christmas for a single mother and her daughter

Santa Claus made a surprise visit to a young single mother and her daughter on Thursday in Los Angeles.

Santa brought toys for the child, 3, and a decorated Christmas Tree, television stand and coffee table from the Society of St. Vincent de Paul for the mother.

Prior to Santa's visit, there was nothing in the small apartment that indicated that it was Christmas, and the TV she had sat on the living room floor.

Upon seeing the gifts, tree and furniture, the mother leaped in the air with excitement.

To support kids who are less fortunate, actors from Hannah Montana, Four Christmases, Parenthood, New Girl, Glee Movie, G-Force, Mad Men, A Better Life, Justin Bieber: Never Say Never and more rallied yesterday to give toys to hundreds of local children at the annual California Highway Patrol Christmas toy distribution thru the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, Council of Los Angeles that is part of a national organization.

Toys were handed out by actors Vincent De Paul (Mad Men, G-Force), Zachary Alexander Rice (Parenthood, Jimmy Kimmel Live), Zach Callison (Hannah Montana); actresses Isabella Rae Thomas (A Better Life, Brothers and Sisters), Julianna Rose (Justin Bieber: Never Say Never, Glee Movie), Jennessa Rose (Four Christmases, Glee Movie), Lauren Dair Owens (New Girl), Brendan Norman (Smosh), Officer Donnell Holmes and Officer Vince Ramirez from the California Highway Patrol, NORKY the Peneagle (symbol of goodwill) and Santa Claus.

Before the event started, Lauren Dair Owens, who plays the young Zooey Deschanel on the FOX show New Girl told me, “I’m out here supporting kids who are less fortunate and need toys, and we’re going to hand out toys for kids. And it’s so exciting to see them and be happy and come to see Santa, and just have fun while they get their toys for Christmas.” Zach Callison shared with a beaming smile, “I am actor and a musician. I’ve been on Hannah Montana, and I’m here to support the event and give out some toys to kids in need.”

Actor Vincent De Paul (G-Force, Mad Men) kicked off the event by greeting hundreds of children lined up to meet Santa and receive toys from the young actors, “I am overwhelmed and touched. I’m so very happy to celebrate with the St Vincent DePaul Society the joy of giving. I’m looking around and seeing all these beautiful faces, and you are our future, and you are the ones that we care about and that we support, and with Chips and Mr. Fields and the St Vincent De Paul Society, we together are caring and giving so each one of you enjoy and celebrate, and I wish you the most happiest of holidays and may 2012 bring great prosperity to everyone.” And once the toy give-away began, there were priceless moments of the kids with Santa, NORKY and the actors captured in the photo slideshow in this story.

Officer Donnell Holmes explained the history of the Chips for Kids program, “We’re here to pass out toys to needy families during the holidays. We have a program called Chips for Kids California Highway Patrol. It’s been in existence for about 22 years now, and what we do is collect toys throughout southern California and get them back out to families who are going to be short during the holidays….We’re building a relationship with these kids because most of the time when they see us it’s during an arrest, ticket, traffic accident or we’re at a restaurant eating and they’re afraid to talk to us. And we want to build a relationship with these kids because they are the future and this is one way of opening up the door by putting a gift in their hand.” Mattel was also represented at the event (Officer Donnell’s wife works in a Mattel retail store), and they donated many of the toys.

And for any kids who have a dream of becoming an actor, Zachary Alexander Rice (Parenthood, Jimmy Kimmel Live) has written a book called Act Like a Kid that will be out in January. Zachary explained, “It’s teaching kids how to get into acting. How to get their agent how to get their headshots, stuff like that, all based on my experiences.”

The group was very excited to work with Actor Vincent De Paul, who has also volunteered to be the spokesperson for the organization. Executive Director David Fields shared a little history about the Society of Vincent de Paul, “Vincent De Paul was a 16th Century Cleric that helped people who were in need in Paris, France. 300 years later, our founder, Frédéric Ozanam, started doing the same thing in the city of Paris helping people who were in need. He picked Vincent De Paul as the patron saint of the organization when it was founded in 1833. What Frédéric Ozanam did was go around and meet people in their homes, sit down with them, and determine their needs, and try to come back and help them. We still do that today. We have 1600 volunteers that are scattered across Los Angeles, Ventura and Santa Barbara counties helping people who are in need, working at the community based level.”

Society's St. Jospeh Conference in Pomona NEEDS Christmas Help

With Christmas less than a week away, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul St. Joseph Conference in Pomona is in GREAT NEED of new gifts for 200 children, ages 1-11, and sponsors for 15 local families through its Adopt-A-Family program for Christmas. These children and families have already been accepted to receive Christmas assistance.

The deadline for toys is tomorrow, December 20, while the cutoff date for Adopt-A-Family sponsors is Thursday, December 22 (financial gifts are also being accepted to purchase toys). Sponsors for the Adopt-A-Family program would purchase gifts and food for the sponsored family. Please call for family size and needs today.

The Society of St. Vincent de Paul’s St. Madeleine Conference in Pomona, which is a group of ‘Vincentian’ volunteers who help enhance the quality of life for the local disadvantaged and working-poor throughout the year, is in GREAT need of new, unwrapped toys for local children of families who already have signed up for assistance.

SVdP participates in 8th Annual Lincoln Heights Christmas Parade

The Society of St. Vincent de Paul's Council of Los Angeles participated in the 8th Annual Lincoln Heights Christmas Parade yesterday.

Traveling west down Broadway in one of the historic sections of Los Angeles, Society President Claire Padama and Executive Director David Fields waved to the crowd from a blue Mustang convertible. St. Vincent de Paul's new Traveling Boutique was also decorated and followed the convertible in the parade.

Society participants included Salvador Salgado (banner carrier), Patricia Guerrero & Stephanie Amesola (both passed out magnets & candy), Jesse Clemente (drove the convertible) and Sam Urive (drove the fashion van).

SVdP participates in 67th Northeast Los Angeles Holiday Parade

The Society of St. Vincent de Paul (SVdP) ushered in the Christmas season by participating in the 67th Northeast Los Angeles Holiday Parade on Sunday.

The Society's entry included its new Traveling Boutique, decorated with Christmas items. SVdP Los Angeles store employee Salvador Salgado held the Society banner. Fellow store employees Shonnise Harston and Art Lamas distributed SVdP magnets to adults and candy canes to children along the parade route, while Sam Urive drove the fashion van.

The parade, entitled 'Fantasy on Figueroa' and presented by the Highland Park Chamber of Commerce, began at Figueroa Street and Ave. 60 and proceeded south on Figueroa to Sycamore Grove Park.

The Society will participate in the Lincoln Heights Christmas Parade on Sunday, December 11. SVdP President Claire Padama and Executive Director David Fields will ride in a convertible Mustang with the Traveling Boutique following the vehicle.

Giant tree topples and fence damaged at SVdP Store in Los Angeles by strong Santa Ana winds

Strong Santa Ana winds have created widespread damage in Southern California in the past 24 hours. And the Society of St. Vincent de Paul has felt the impact.

A giant tree in front of the Society's Los Angeles store gave way and damaged the surrounding fence. Fortunately, the parking lot was empty and nobody was injured, as it fell in the early morning hours before the store was open.

Jouni’s Kitchen & SVdP's St. Joseph Conference serve 14th Annual Community Thanksgiving Day Meal

Jouni’s Kitchen of San Bernardino and the Society of St. Vincent de Paul’s St. Joseph Conference in Pomona served their 14th annual Community Thanksgiving Day meal last Thursday.

Henry Cabrera, president of the Society’s St. Joseph Conference, a group of ‘Vincentian’ volunteers who help improve the lives of local children and families throughout the year, said 600 meals were enjoyed. Children from St. Joseph's School served the meals to the diners, while others drew special Thanksgiving place mats.

Jouni, a parishioner at St. Joseph Church and a member of St. Joseph’s American Arab Catholic Community (AACC), donated and cooked - with the help of volunteers - the hot delicious holiday meal. AACC and the Knights of Columbus, Council 877, also assisted with the feast.

Children from St. Joseph's School served the meals to the diners. Entertainment was provided by the Folorico Dancers, Western Connection Dance, Miguel & Brothers and Carlos & Isabel.

Individuals also received new blankets as they entered the hall.

Glamour and charitable work came together at the Society of St. Vincent de Paul's Thrift Store today when the Society's new 'Traveling Boutique' was introduced prior to the store's 1st Thanksgiving basket distribution.

Society President Claire Padama spoke about the fashion van - the first of its kind for a non-profit in Los Angeles - and how it will help further enhance the Society's visibility and work for the local homeless and disadvantaged. It was Claire's dream that St. Vincent de Paul have a fashion van.

Society Store Director Tony Terrazas, who designed the store turkey distribution, thanked AAA Rubbish, Inc. and Athens Services for sponsoring the holiday giveaway. More than 120 local families benefited from the distribution, as each received a turkey and all the fixings.

St. Vincent de Paul Deputy Executive Director David Garcia welcomed everyone and served as the emcee.

Winter shelter manager reaches autumn of his life

As the nights get cooler and Thanksgiving approaches, Tom McLaughlin's thoughts turn to the big meal.

He orders enough meat, potatoes, vegetables and biscuits to feed 100 or so guests. He makes sure public transit can transport them to the feed. He gets more than 100 blankets and towels laundered so guests can stay the night. He establishes a rapport with city officials, police and the National Guard, in case of trouble. And there is always trouble. He hires a service to clean up afterward.

This big meal is not Thanksgiving, although those who eat it may feel gratitude. Or not; McLaughlin is fine with it either way. This is the nightly dinner served to the homeless at the winter warming shelter, which will open Dec. 1 in the National Guard Armory in Ventura. The shelter, run by the nonprofit Society of Vincent de Paul, alternates each year between Oxnard and Ventura.

For the past nine Novembers, McLaughlin — the shelter manager — has devoted his life to making sure the refuge opens every night prepared to provide homeless men, women and children a safe, warm place to sleep until the shelter closes in March.

This year is different, though. This year, McLaughlin of Thousand Oaks is fighting for his life. Diagnosed with melanoma, he had surgery last fall. He later learned the disease had metastasized. Melanoma is among the worst of the bad actors in all cancer land after it spreads.

After a patient is diagnosed with Stage 3, the end usually comes quickly.

McLaughlin said he is not quite a Stage 3 patient; the cancer has not invaded his organs or bones.

An experimental drug shrank his tumors. But after his second treatment, he couldn't get out of bed, sleeping 22 hours a day.

McLaughlin quit taking the drug a few weeks ago and says he feels better now. When we talked last week, the father of eight looked younger than his 79 years.

McLaughlin admits he stopped the drug in part because it would have rendered him incapable of getting the shelter up and running this year.

His dedication is known to everyone who sees him at work.

"I have volunteered at the shelter and was so impressed at how he treated the clients with such dignity, humor and camaraderie," said Nora Howells, co-founder of the No Room at the Inn fundraiser for the homeless.

McLaughlin insists everyone who stays at the shelter be called a guest. He makes sure volunteers or staff serve them their dinner plates. No standing in a soup line for them.

He feeds the guests supersized meals and plans on their demolishing 10 ounces of potatoes each night. His wife of 56 years, Audrey, bakes cupcakes twice a week as a treat for the guests.

After his own hard-luck childhood, McLaughlin developed a heart for the down and out.

His pre-employment screening for the paid staff consists of this question, "If a nasty drunk is calling you obscene names and then vomits all over you, what would you do?"

If they answer anything but "clean it up," McLaughlin doesn't hire them.

"Tom is out there working among the lilies of the field, clothing the naked, the hungry and consoling the frightened and embracing the leper," said Jack McGee, who successfully nominated McLaughlin for the Jefferson Award for service in 2004.

McLaughlin is the king of understatement.

"It's not a healthy population," he said of the homeless who will stream into the armory this winter.

Some arrive with head lice, scabies, AIDS and MRSA, a vicious form of staph infection.

He lays in a supply of gloves for employees to delouse the guests or clean up their body fluids.

A retired scientist who worked for Hewlett-Packard when it was a startup, McLaughlin discovered he was effective in getting things done for the underprivileged. A deeply religious man, he considers it a sign he is doing what he should be.

This year, though, Audrey is not so sure. She wants him to go back on the treatments.

"Fatigue won't kill you. Melanoma will," she tells him.

McLaughlin does plan to turn over management of the shelter to his successor in mid-December.

Then, with his oncologist, he will decide if continuing the experimental treatment makes sense.

He changes the subject back to the shelter. Coffee. The shelter needs someone to donate coffee, sugar and creamer. To McLaughlin, it just won't do to have guests and not offer them their morning Cup Of Joe.

The Society of St. Vincent de Paul’s St. Madeleine Conference in Pomona is seeking the public's assistance with food donations and financial gifts for its Thanksgiving distribution to the local poor and homeless who have already signed up for the baskets. Assistance is needed with the following:

• Thanksgiving Baskets – Canned food for 100 families. Donations accepted from 9 am to 4:30 pm until November 17.

• Community Thanksgiving Meal – Rolls, Bread, Yams, Canned Vegetables, Gravy, Butter and Punch for 80 individuals. Donations accepted from 9 am to 4:30 pm, Monday through Friday, in the parish office (and) from 7:30 am to 5 pm on Sunday in the parish hall until November 22.

In addition, financial gifts to purchase the needed food can be earmarked ‘2011 SVdP Thanksgiving’ and sent to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul St. Madeleine Conference, 931 E. Kingsley Ave., Pomona, CA 91767.

The Society of St. Vincent de Paul’s St. Nativity Conference in Los Angeles is seeking the public's assistance with food donations and financial gifts for its Thanksgiving basket distribution to the local poor who have already signed up for the baskets.

2nd Annual Black and White Dinner Dance Fundraiser benefits winter shelter in West Ventura County

The 2nd Annual 'A Home 4 Everyone' Black and White Dinner Dance Fundraiser was held on Saturday at the Oxnard Performing Arts & Convention Center.

Proceeds raised will benefit the Society of St. Vincent de Paul's (SVdP) West Ventura County Emergency Winter Shelter. The event was organized by the Ventura Social Services Task Force, City of Oxnard Commission on Homelessness and SVdP.

The evening included silent and live auctions, dinner and dancing to the music of CHICO.

Oxnard Commissioner on Homelessness Peggy Rivera and her committee organized a first-class event. St. Vincent de Paul thanks everyone who served on the committee and attended the dinner. Your caring hearts will help countless individuals this winter!

Santa Paula's Latino Town Hall to recognize Thomas and Rosalina Lugo

They've been called angels for charitable work that has helped hundreds of struggling Santa Paula families, but Thomas and Rosalina Lugo frown when they hear such praise.

Volunteers for the past 12 years with the Society of St. Vincent de Paul/St. Sebastian Conference, the Lugos say they're just two of many who help provide impoverished families with food, money and furniture.

"We're a team. That's the whole thing," said Rosalina Lugo, 65, a retired radiology technician. "It's not just Thomas and me."

The Lugos' sense of modesty will be tested Sept. 9 when they receive the Santa Paula Latino Town Hall's highest honor, the Raymond Garcia Humanitarian Award, at the group's 15th annual awards dinner at the La Casa Del Mexicano Hall.

"I don't like receiving awards. It's not my thing," said Rosalina Lugo.

The only rewards they seek are the smiles of those they have helped, said Thomas Lugo, 69, a retired concrete company employee.

Saying the slow economy has magnified the misery for those out of work or just not earning enough to pay for necessities, he recalled a couple whose four children were placed into foster care after school officials found out the family was living in a van. The Lugos heard of their plight, helped the parents find subsidized housing and some furniture and the family was reunited.

Sometimes, when delivering food, or a refrigerator, they will count the children and the number of beds in a home and ask where the little ones sleep. Too often, Thomas Lugo said, the answer is the couch or the floor.

Within days, the Lugos are back with new beds secured from Catholic Charities.

Upon getting her new bed, one little girl asked if they could bring a dresser, too. When the Lugos showed up with one, she asked them to come back for Christmas.

"You bring good stuff," she told them.

"Before, we had mostly older people (seeking help)," Thomas Lugo said. "Now you see people of all ages."

Parents of three grown children with four grandkids, the Lugos work every Thursday afternoon in a pantry behind St. Sebastian's Catholic Church, handing out bags of rice and beans, canned goods, diapers and toiletries.

Thomas Lugo picks up the food, provided by federal agencies through FOOD Share, the county food bank, and hauls them to the church in a trailer hooked to his pickup.

Lately, the Lugos have been helping to feed 270 families a week. In the winter months, the number swells past 400. The society also assists with paying rent and utilities, using money donated by parishioners or through grants.

"I've known them for about 30 years," said Laura Espinosa, who wrote up a biography of the Lugos after St. Sebastian's Deacon Art Guilin decided to nominate them for the Garcia award. "They are totally supportive of the effort to feed the hungry of Santa Paula."

"They are the stars," fellow parishioner Robert Bagdazian said as he helped the Lugos make breakfast burritos at a fundraiser for the church's Eagle Scouts on a recent Sunday. "They should win it every year."

Other Latino Town Hall Awards honorees are La Michoacana Bakery owner Ruben Suarez in the business category; Patricia Gomez in the youth category; Santa Paula Union High School District Superintendent David Gomez in the education category; Many Meals volunteer Rudy Jimenez for community service; youth sports volunteer coach Phil Rodriguez in the sports category; and Silvia Huerta in the cultural arts category.

Councilmember Ed P. Reyes dedicates Society's Historical Sign

Councilmember Ed P. Reyes of the First Council District officially dedicated the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, Council of Los Angeles' historical designation sign today at St. Vincent de Paul's office/store in Los Angeles.

Councilmember Reyes spoke about growing up in the neighborhood and thanked the Society for its various programs to help those in need.

Father Pedro Villarroya, C.M., Council spiritual advisor, blessed the Society's new sign. St. Vincent de Paul President Claire Padama and Executive Director David Fields also said a few words and thanked Councilmember Reyes for his support of the Society's local outreach.

The Society's Council of Los Angeles, which serves the counties of L.A., Ventura and Santa Barbara, has been a presence in Southern California since 1908.

The Society of St. Vincent de Paul made a lot of new friends last weekend with its community booth at the 5th Annual Sharing Festival at Young Nak Church of Los Angeles.

Society staff members distributed St. Vincent de Paul bags, cups, pens, magnets and various publications to many individuals who attended this special event. The event included food, community booths, rides, games and entertainment.

Thank you Young Nak for allowing the Society to place a booth at your festival. Everyone had a great time.

Society receives special award from Catholic Charities

The Society of St. Vincent de Paul's Council of Los Angeles was honored on October 7 by Most Reverend Oscar A. Solis, D.D., Auxiliary Bishop, Archdiocese of Los Angeles, and Catholic Charities, San Pedro Pastoral Region, for its outstanding service to the poor and vulnerable of our community.

Society President Claire Padama and Society Executive Director David Fields accepted the award from Bishop Solis, while Padama gave a short PowerPoint presentation about St. Vincent de Paul's local outreach.

The special event - An Evening with Angels - was held at The Reef on the Water in Long Beach and included a silent auction, photos with Bishop Solis, entertainment and dinner. Anna Totta, regional director of Catholic Charities, introduced the Society.

Thank you Catholic Charities for the generous recognition. With God's grace, both St. Vincent de Paul and Catholic Charities will continue to help improve the quality of life for families and individuals in need.

The Society of St. Vincent de Paul held a 'Volunteer Recruitment Fair' on Saturday, attracting new volunteers to help carry on the Society's outreach in the counties of Los Angeles,Ventura and Santa Barbara.

Additional volunteers, 18 years and older, are needed, though, in a region still hurting from a difficult economy - the worst since the Great Depression.

Won't you please help the Society help others? Assistance is needed at the Society's three thrift stores in Los Angeles, Long Beach and Oxnard. Mentors are also needed at St. Vincent de Paul's Cardinal Manning Center (shelter) in downtown Los Angeles.

The Society of St. Vincent de Paul will be recruiting volunteers to help with its local charitable services at a Volunteer Fair from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. tomorrow, October 1, at the Society’s Thrift Store, 210 N. Avenue 21, Los Angeles, 90031. FREE snacks will be provided.

Volunteers are needed to help in a variety of areas at the Society’s thrift stores in Los Angeles, Long Beach and Oxnard. In addition, volunteer mentors are being sought for St. Vincent de Paul’s Cardinal Manning Center (shelter) in the Toy District of downtown L.A.

“Volunteers are the backbone to our community outreach in the counties of Los Angeles, Ventura and Santa Barbara. These individuals make a huge impact when it comes to improving the quality of life for thousands of children, women and men every year,” said David Fields, executive director of St. Vincent de Paul. “Our goal is to recruit additional volunteers who can help us continue that legacy of rebuilding lives.”

The Friends of the Society - a group of individuals who assist the Society of St. Vincent de Paul's Council of Los Angeles with future events, donors and more - recently met at the Valley Hunt Club in Pasadena.

During the special luncheon, St. Vincent de Paul Executive Director David Fields showed a PowerPoint presentation about the Society's latest activities. A discussion was then held on how the Society and its team of 'Friends' can further collaborate in helping the homeless and disadvantaged.

13th Annual Layette Project in Los Angeles is a Hit!

In celebration of the Feast Day of St. Vincent de Paul on Tuesday, approximately 15'Vincentian' volunteers from the Society's Our Lady of Angels (OLA) District distributed layette packages to 50 newborns at California Hospital Medical Center.

New mothers were pleasantly surprised by the gifts and were appreciative of the kindness shown them and their newborns by people they had never met.

"Oh my gosh," said Alejandra Vasquez. "So cute. I was not expecting these things. I can use everything they gave me today. (The people from St. Vincent de Paul) were so nice. You can tell it came from their hearts."

The first six children born on or near St. Vincent de Paul's Feast Day were also presented strollers.

Originally founded by Vincentian Dorothy Campbell 13 years ago, the layette project is a favorite of OLA President Suzanne Mingleton.

"We've been planning for this since January. Not only did we hold fundraisers, but more of the Conferences in our District also participated in purchasing and donating the gifts. We are very proud of the packages we handed to the moms."

Mingleton added that she enjoys the layette project for another reason. "In some cases, if they haven't named their babies already, I get a chance to tell them to name them Vincent. Paul is okay too," she said laughing.

Today, September 27, we celebrate the Feast of St. Vincent de Paul, the patron of the Society. Before this day is done, please take a moment to reflect on our mission, and say a special prayer for the work we do as Vincentians as well as for those whom we serve.

As I end my last days as President of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, I want to thank all of you for your efforts to bring assistance and direction to the least among us. If I have come far, it is because you have chosen to make the journey with me.

Society of St. Vincent de Paul to host a ‘Volunteer Fair’ on October 1

The Society of St. Vincent de Paul will be recruiting volunteers to help with its local charitable services at a Volunteer Fair from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on October 1 at the Society’s Thrift Store, 210 N. Avenue 2, Los Angeles, 90031. FREE snacks will be provided.

Volunteers are needed to help in a variety of areas at the Society’s thrift stores in Los Angeles, Long Beach and Oxnard. In addition, volunteer mentors are being sought for St. Vincent de Paul’s Cardinal Manning Center (shelter) in the Toy District of downtown L.A.

“Volunteers are the backbone to our community outreach in the counties of Los Angeles, Ventura and Santa Barbara. These individuals make a huge impact when it comes to improving the quality of life for thousands of children, women and men every year,” said David Fields, executive director of St. Vincent de Paul. “Our goal is to recruit additional volunteers who can help us continue that legacy of rebuilding lives.”

Individuals, 18 years of age and older, are encouraged to attend this special Volunteer Fair to see how YOU can make a difference in a life today!

Lend Lease employees help brighten Cardinal Manning Center

Eight employees from Lend Lease in downtown Los Angeles recently spent four hours painting the women/children's section of the Society's Cardinal Manning Center in the toy district of Skid Row.

According to Mike Concannon, senior vice president of Lend Lease in L.A., St. Vincent de Paul's shelter was chosen because "it is within our local community, our office is walking distance from Cardinal Manning and we wanted to make sure our efforts were felt locally."

Concannon indicated the employees enjoyed volunteering their time and helping others in need.

"We (at Lend Lease) know we are all very fortunate. To take time to get involved and give back is extremely important and gratifying."

The employee's participation was part of the company's 16th Annual Community Day in which more than 15,000 employees globally spent time giving back to charities and organizations in their local communities.

When asked about next year's Community Day, Concannon said, "We fully expect to be working with Cardinal Manning again next year."

Last week, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul and the Catholic Schools Consortium awarded backpacks filled with school supplies to 24 elementary age students from eight inner city Catholic Schools in the Tom Bradley Tower of Los Angeles City Hall.

The children were excited to receive the backpacks. One of the schools - St. Eugene School in Los Angeles - thanked the Society with a special video. Please click here to view the video.
