Vincentian Inspiration

"New works, however holy, do not develop
unless they have a promoter who follows them closely."
- St. Vincent de Paul

Nuevas obras, cuan santas sean éstas, no se desarrollan
a menos que tengan un promotor que les de seguimiento de muy cerca.

-San Vicente de Paul
O God, remove from me all fear of new beginnings.  Give me the courage I need
to undertake and see to completion good works done in your name.

O Señor, remueve de mi todo miedo de un nuevo comienzo.  Dame la fortaleza que necesito
para tomar en mis manos y llevar a cabo buenas obras hechas en tu nombre.

Vincentian Inspiration

“It is from prayer that we must expect the light and strength that are indispensable for a veritable renewal;
it is in prayer that we shall discover the particular points toward which we should direct our efforts.”
– Mother Suzanne Guillemin, D.C.

“Es de la oración que debemos esperar la luz y la Fortaleza que son indispensables para una renovación real;
Es en la oración que vamos a descubrir las áreas particulares a donde debemos dirigir nuestros esfuerzos.”

-Madre Suzanne Guillemin, H.C.
– Today, I resolve to find a few quiet moments to spend in your presence, Lord.
There I hope to find the strength and courage I need to renew myself.

-Hoy, me comprometo a encontrar unos momentos en silencio para estar en tu presencia, Señor.
Allí espero encontrar la fortaleza y el valor que necesito para renovarme.

SVdPLA in LA Times

Toys, food, and shoes for everyone!

University Prep Value High School
JANUARY 13, 2017
The greatest gift you can give someone is your time. Because when you give your time, you are giving a portion of your life that you will never get back.
Giving back has many meanings. I think it means to be warm and kind, also, to be open to others. Giving back is helping a community, making it stronger and bringing people together.
Last year, University Prep took a trip to St. Vincent De Paul Society to help them on a special mission. St. Vincent helps families by providing shelter, food and clothing. Our mission was to pack bags with food for about 700 families.
My job was really fun. First, I was unfolding bags. Then, I was given a bright orange vest and was told to go outside and help answer any questions the families had and give them directions. After, I was moved from where I was and was making sure that nobody cut in the line. Finally, I was in charge of overseeing the bags that were ready to give out.
It made me feel great. The families who attended were families of low-income that possibly wouldn’t have had a meal to eat that day. But by giving them bags with useful food inside, created a feeling within me that I did something good that day. It was incredible to see the families with smiles on their faces, just like I did.
If we worked together we can have a positive and strong community. I believe working together is a great idea, and an essential component in building a nurturing community. We can help each other grow and not be left behind. We must communicate with each other to support one another.
Giving back to our community may be an inspiration for others to do the same. If a person sees you giving back they might want to do it too. We can positively influence people to help each other.
Students at University Prep are people of value by doing what we do we put our values in action representing what a person of value is. Doing all these community events is putting a positive view on University Prep Value High School.

Everyone Deserves a Second Chance

When Mike arrived at St. Vincent de Paul’s Cardinal Manning Center on Skid Row in Los Angeles, he was homeless, underemployed, and in debt. His driver’s license had been revoked, he had lost his job as a commercial driver, and he had lost his home. After three months at the center, Mike was out of debt, working a new job, and moved into permanent housing. Mike was thankful to the warm center staff and to his social worker, Ann, in particular. She helped him find housing and set up the plan for him to repay his debt. Mike felt he was able to grow as a person during his stay. Mike felt blessed by the opportunities he was given at the center. “I’ve recommended this program over and over to everyone I know,” Mike said. “Everyone deserves a second chance.”
