CMC Hosts College’s Urban Plunge

Students Combine Reflection with Good Work on Spring Plunges Produced by: Office of Marketing and Communications Friday, March 17, 2017 As a freshman, Andrea Lozano ’20CPS is still new to college life. But she is already rethinking the future, thanks to a five-day service trip she took during spring break through St. John’s University. “It was very inspiring,” said Andrea, a criminal justice major at SJU’s Staten Island campus. “I’ve been thinking about law school for a while—now I’m interested in social justice law, something that really helps people.” Changing lives is an aim of SJU’s Plunge Program. The nine, weeklong service trips, offered through Campus Ministry draw students throughout the academic year. They work in soup kitchens, mentor children, paint schools, and repair homes, among other activities. “It’s more than charity,” said Rev. Tri M. Duong, C.M., Campus Minister and the program’s coordinator. “It’s Vincentian Service, reflecting Catholic Social Teaching. Our focus is tra…

Vincentian Inspiration

"Allow yourself to be led by His fatherly love, for He does love us and is far from rejecting a righteous man; He will not even abandon a wicked man who hopes in his mercy."
-San Vicente de Paul Heavenly Father, the only thing I can be sure of is your love for me. Protect me and lead me as I go about my day.
Padre Celestial, la única cosa de la que puedo estar seguro/a es de tu amor por mí. Protégeme y guíame durante el transcurso de mi día. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Society of St. Vincent de Paul, Council of Los Angeles

A New Opportunity

Image
At 68, Gordon decided to leave hospice care. He was being treated for prostate cancer, but wanted to live on his own. He found a small trailer to rent in Long Beach. Then, while driving, he got into a car accident.
Thankfully, Gordon wasn’t injured. But since he didn’t have a current driver’s license, he ended up in jail. After his release, he realized the monthly social security benefits that helped him survive were taken away.
Gordon, a Vietnam veteran, struggled to pay his rent… and soon, faced eviction from his home.
“I needed help,” he remembers. “I went to the V.A., and didn’t get very far. That was when St. Vincent de Paul stepped up to help me… and pretty much saved my life.”
Our Long Beach Conference helped with two months of rent to prevent Gordon’s eviction so he could work on restoring his benefits.
