Vincentian Inspiration

Image
The Principle of the Common Good Today, in an age of global interdependence,  the principle of the common good points to the need for international structures that can promote the just development of persons and families across  regional and national lines.

El Principio del Bien Común En este tiempo de interdependencia global, el principio del bien común nos dirige hacia la necesidad de estructuras internacionales que promuevan el desarrollo justo
de personas y familias a través de líneas regionales y nacionales.
Whether at the national level or locally in  my own community, job or family, help me Lord to always see the common good,  to work always for the growth and well-being of all the members.
Ya sea a nivel nacional o localmente en mi propia comunidad, trabajo o familia, ayúdame Señor, a ver siempre el bien común,  y a trabajar siempre por el crecimiento y bienestar de todos los miembros.

Interfaith Homeless Memorial Service

Image
The East San Gabriel Valley Collation for the Homeless will remember the lives of the homeless who have died in Los Angeles County. Between November 2015 and August 2016, 472 homeless persons have died in Los Angeles County many of whom died on our streets from various causes. Because no one claimed their bodies, their remains will be cremated and will be interred in a common gravesite with only a plaque marking the year of their interment.

Bishop David O’Connell will preside over a memorial service along with Venerable Hui Dong of Hsi Lai Temple in Hacienda Heights, Rabbi David Mattis of Temple Sholom in Ontario, Marci Hoopes Mormon Arcadia Public Affairs Director, and Said Seddouk, Iman from the Islamic Center of the San Gabriel Valley. Music will be performed by Bryan Pezzone of West Covina United Methodist Church to honor and re-member the homeless amongst us especially those that have died on the streets. The memorial service will be at Sacred Heart Catholic Church 344 Workman St,…

Faith in God and the Goodwill of Others

Image
Sarah moved with her son from Virginia to Ventura County to live closer to her older son. Her plan was to find work, but first she found little affordable housing. Suddenly homeless in winter, Sarah thought, “I’m in a bad situation, but I’m going to find a place for us to stay until I find an apartment.” Some nights, that place was Denny’s, where she and her son ordered water and coffee so they could stay warm and dry. Through St. Vincent de Paul, Sarah and her son received temporary housing and help from Case Manager Molly Skidmore. Before long, Skidmore found Sarah an apartment. The Society provided bedding, dishes and bus fare so Sarah could move in and go to job interviews. Sarah found a job within a week. Sarah had moments of panic during her homelessness, but said her optimism never waned as she searched for permanent housing. She had faith in God and the goodwill of others. To help SVdPLA help others, donate here.
