Daily Vincentian Inspiration

"Let us depend entirely on God, full of confidence that
no matter what men may do or say, all will turn to our good.
Yes, should the whole world unite for our destruction,
nothing can happen to us but by the permission of God,
in whom we have placed our whole trust."

Lord, it is being brought home to me that even when my best intentions and motives are criticized,
I must be open to accept whatever truth there may be in those words and then trust the rest to you.

"It is in silence that we can hear God speak to our hearts."

You speak to me, Lord, but often I can't hear you
because I don't take time to listen in silence.
I will plan to take time today for quiet reflection.

Kenny Lund Receives Award From St. Vincent de Paul

By:  |  at 02:18 PM | Intermodal

La Cañada Flintridge Calif. - The Allen Lund Company is pleased to announce that Kenny Lund, VP of Support Operations, is receiving an award from St. Vincent de Paul in honor of his extensive volunteer work. The award will be presented at Society of St. Vincent de Paul’s 2016 Mardi Gras in May Benefit Dinner and Awards Ceremony on May 25, 2016.
“St. Vincent De Paul has a long history of serving those in need from all walks of life. To receive recognition from them is hard for me to understand, when they do so much,” stated Kenny Lund. “The things I have done to serve others have always ended up coming back in ways that enrich my life. My hope is that this inspires others to get involved in the greater community for the benefit of everyone involved and the improvement of oneself.”
David Fields, Executive Director of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul of Los Angeles added, “We’re very grateful for the kind work and friendship of a man like Kenny. Honorees for our Mardi Gras in May Gala are chosen based on their passion and support of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul’s mission to help the needy. They display a strong connection to the Society’s spiritual foundation. Kenny Lund is very worthy of the honor that will be given to him at our benefit.”

Delivering Second Chances

By Jon Nerdig

When Mike arrives at St. Vincent de Paul’s Cardinal Manning Center (CMC) on Skid Row, he was in the midst of that he described as the worst period of his life. He was homeless, underemployed, and in debt. First his driver’s license had been revoked, then he lost his job as a commercial river and eventually he lost his home. He was in need of a second chance. At the CMC he was given that chance.

After just three months at the center, Mike was out of debt, working at a new job, and moving into permanent housing. In his words, “Everything seems to be going my way.” Mike was a participant in the Men’s Advancement Program (MAP), a program for working adult men experiencing homelessness. Following the program, Mike was able to save 60% of his income to pay off his debt.

A large part of his success he attributes to the helpful CMC staff. “Every single one of them I would give a grade A,” he said. Mike was especially thankful for the assistance he received from his social worker, Ann, at the CMC who helped set up the repayment plan to repay his debt.

Mike had been to other programs before his arrival, but was quick to say that the CMC was where he received the help he needed. He appreciated how peaceful the CMC was. It didn’t seem like a program, it was more like an opportunity to learn.

Mike believes coming to the CMC was, “What God intended for him,” and that he was able to grow as a person during his stay. In the future, Mike hopes to save enough money to move to a nicer apartment, but for now he is content. He feels very blessed by the opportunities he was given at the CMC, and wishes that everyone who is homeless would experience the program.

“I’ve recommended this program over and over to everyone I know,” Mike said. “Everyone deserves a second chance.”

"Pride is a most pernicious vice, and the more to be dreaded

"El orgullo es un vicio muy dañino, y a de tenérsele pavor

- San Vicente de Paul

Lord, I thank you for loving and sustaining me in spite of my foolish pride,
which tempts me to believe I am better than others. Forgive this sin
and help me to understand that others, too, are equally blessed by you.
