The Society’s Circle V Ranch Camp was filled with happy families last weekend at Circle V’s annual family camp, this year with a holiday theme.  A good time was had by all, old and young, big and small!

Society Speaks to Paramount Rotary

Chris Sariego, the Society’s Director of Public Relations and Marketing spoke to the Rotary Club of Paramount yesterday on the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, Council of Los Angeles.  The Paramount Rotary Club was a warm and welcoming group.  Next week the Society will speak to the Rotary Club of Santa Clarita, joined by local Vincentians Hilmar Rosenast and Rick Montoya. Rosenast is a past council president of the Society. If you are a Santa Clarita Rotary Club member we look forward to meeting you!

Final World Cup Soccer Ball Winner

Erik Limon won the final official World Cup soccer ball last week at the Society’s Los Angeles thrift store.  Limon and his friends came in to pick up the ball.  Limon described them as regular shoppers for clothing, bikes and other items.  “My grandmother is like a 30-year-shopper at the store and she told us about it,” smiled Limon.  Congratulations Erik on your new World Cup soccer ball, a $169 dollar value!

Broken children are mended here by getting some love

St. Vincent de Paul’s summer Circle V Ranch Camp provides more than wilderness experiences to 1,200 kids.


Sitting on a wood plank bench in the outdoor chapel, Matthew Herrera was seriously thinking how much more comfortable it was then on those big round logs — lots better with no bugs crawling up your legs. For five years he’d swatted them away.
This morning, midway through the week of his sixth summer at Circle V Ranch Camp, he was listening to Father Peter, who he liked a lot, do his sing-song thing — calling out and campers calling back. Like right now, with the priest saying in “church talk” you could understand, even with his funny Irish accent, “‘The table at which He was plentifully nourished.’ Nourish means to feed. What does nourished mean?”

Society Speaks to West Covina Rotary

Chris Sariego, the Society’s Director of Public Relations and Marketing, was invited by West Covina NoontimeRotary Club President Mary Ramos to speak to the club about the Society July 17, 2014.  Ramos is also a Vincentian, and the President of Saint Joseph, La Puente, Conference of Charity. Several West Covina Rotarians said after Sariego’s presentation that they look forward to donating used furniture and appliances to the Society’s thrift stores.  For free pickup by truck of your donation please call 1-800-974-3571.

Store Employees Complete Six Sigma

Many of the Society’s Los Angeles thrift store employees completed on July 15,2014 the Lean Six Sigma Class Level I to increase productivity in the store.

Vincentian Alan Bernstein New LA5 President

Vincentian Alan Berntstein, new president of LA5, the Rotary Club of Los Angeles and the fifth oldest Rotary Club in the world, chaired his first meeting of the LA5 Rotary today at the California Club in Los Angeles. Mr. Bernstein is the first African-American to lead LA5 in the club's 106 year history.   "We are one of the 50 largest of the 34,733 Rotary Clubs in the world. We are also fortunate to have one of the largest Rotary Club Foundations within Rotary International with assets in excess of $8 million, which gives our club the ability to fund many local and international projects and grants," said Bernstein.
The special keynote speaker today was Jeanie Buss, President and Co-Owner of the Los Angeles Lakers. She was introduced and interviewed by the stand-up comedian and weathercaster Fritz Coleman of NBC4.

Circle V Ranch Camp Hosts Weekend “Family Camp” for All Ages July 25-27, 20

Santa Ynez Valley, Santa Barbara County, California—The public is invited to attend the Circle V Ranch “Family Camp” from Friday, July 25 through Sunday, July 27, 2014. Circle V Ranch Camp & Retreat Center is located just 20 minutes north of Santa Barbara across from Cachuma Lake in the Santa Ynez Valley. Long-time Camp Director Ray Lopez announced, “For those families looking for a taste of Circle V, we invite all ages to experience our Family Camp weekend."
Circle V Ranch “Family Camp” activities available include: archery, hiking, swimming in the pool, arts & crafts, painting, playing games of ping pong, soccer, or basketball, as well as miniature golf. (There is no TV, radio or internet access to affect the Circle V Ranch Camp experience.) Campers stay in cabins (accommodating up to ten people. New Chapel for Circle V Ranch Camp

On Tuesday, July 8, 2014, members of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul Los Angeles Council along with 175 campers and staff celebrated the dedication of a new, outdoor chapel at the Society’s Circle V Ranch Camp & Retreat Center located just 20 minutes north of Santa Barbara at 2550 Highway 154 across from Cachuma Lake.
Situated in a grove of native oak and fir trees, the new outdoor chapel seats 200 on 54 benches made of Monterey pine and the altar is made of sycamore; both hand-crafted by John Miller of Goleta. The hand-made redwood cross donated by camp volunteer Paul Melancon of Solvang stands an impressive eight feet high and five feet wide.  The original chapel in the woods only seated 150 on rough-hewn logs. A generous donor made this new facility a reality.
The formal dedication of the chapel was conducted by Father Peter Banks, O.F.M.Cap. from Old Mission Santa Ines in nearby Solvang. Father Banks regularly celebrates Mass during summer camp sessions and was honored to hav…

World Cup Ball from St. Vincent de Paul

The Society’s Los Angeles thrift store manager Carla Contreras presented shopper Joey Chavez with an official World Cup soccer ball last week, a $169 value.  Chavez described himself as an occasional shopper at the Los Angeles store. “I just got lucky!” he said.  Two more official World Cup soccer balls are available to be won in the stores’ drawing.  Come down and fill out a ticket!

Winner of an official World Cup soccer ball through the SVDPLA drawing for last week, Laurentina Espinoza, picked up her ball today, a $169 value.
