Jouni’s Kitchen & SVdP's St. Joseph Conference serve 14th Annual Community Thanksgiving Day Meal

Jouni’s Kitchen of San Bernardino and the Society of St. Vincent de Paul’s St. Joseph Conference in Pomona served their 14th annual Community Thanksgiving Day meal last Thursday.

Henry Cabrera, president of the Society’s St. Joseph Conference, a group of ‘Vincentian’ volunteers who help improve the lives of local children and families throughout the year, said 600 meals were enjoyed. Children from St. Joseph's School served the meals to the diners, while others drew special Thanksgiving place mats.

Jouni, a parishioner at St. Joseph Church and a member of St. Joseph’s American Arab Catholic Community (AACC), donated and cooked - with the help of volunteers - the hot delicious holiday meal. AACC and the Knights of Columbus, Council 877, also assisted with the feast.

Children from St. Joseph's School served the meals to the diners. Entertainment was provided by the Folorico Dancers, Western Connection Dance, Miguel & Brothers and Carlos & Isabel.

The Society of St. Vincent de Paul's ST. IGNATIUS of LOYOLA Conference in Los Angeles will host a Christmas Yard Sale from 8 am to 2 pm on Saturday, December 3 at 625 N. Avenue 66, 90042.

Items for sale will include decorations and gifts.

Glamour & charitable work come together at SVdP Store in Los Angeles

Glamour and charitable work came together at the Society of St. Vincent de Paul's Thrift Store today when the Society's new 'Traveling Boutique' was introduced prior to the store's 1st Thanksgiving basket distribution.

Society President Claire Padama spoke about the fashion van - the first of its kind for a non-profit in Los Angeles - and how it will help further enhance the Society's visibility and work for the local homeless and disadvantaged. It was Claire's dream that St. Vincent de Paul have a fashion van.

Society Store Director Tony Terrazas, who designed the store turkey distribution, thanked AAA Rubbish, Inc. and Athens Services for sponsoring the holiday giveaway. More than 120 local families benefited from the distribution, as each received a turkey and all the fixings.

St. Vincent de Paul Deputy Executive Director David Garcia welcomed everyone and served as the emcee.

Jouni’s Catering of Upland and the Society of St. Vincent de Paul’s St. Joseph Conference in Pomona invite the public to attend their 14th annual FREE Community Thanksgiving Day meal from 11 am to 2 pm, Thursday, November 24 at St. Joseph Church, 1150 W. Holt Avenue, Pomona.

Henry Cabrera, president of the Society’s St. Joseph Conference, a group of ‘Vincentian’ volunteers who help improve the lives of local children and families throughout the year, expects to serve 600 meals on Thanksgiving – a slight increase from last year.

Jouni, a parishioner at St. Joseph Church and a member of St. Joseph’s American Arab Catholic Community (AACC) said that he enjoys Thanksgiving because it allows he and his family to share this day with others. AACC and the Knights of Columbus, Council 877, will also assist with the feast.

Winter shelter manager reaches autumn of his life

As the nights get cooler and Thanksgiving approaches, Tom McLaughlin's thoughts turn to the big meal.

He orders enough meat, potatoes, vegetables and biscuits to feed 100 or so guests. He makes sure public transit can transport them to the feed. He gets more than 100 blankets and towels laundered so guests can stay the night. He establishes a rapport with city officials, police and the National Guard, in case of trouble. And there is always trouble. He hires a service to clean up afterward.

This big meal is not Thanksgiving, although those who eat it may feel gratitude. Or not; McLaughlin is fine with it either way. This is the nightly dinner served to the homeless at the winter warming shelter, which will open Dec. 1 in the National Guard Armory in Ventura. The shelter, run by the nonprofit Society of Vincent de Paul, alternates each year between Oxnard and Ventura.

The Society of St. Vincent de Paul’s St. Patrick Conference in North Hollywood is seeking the public's assistance with food donations and financial gifts for its Thanksgiving distribution to the local poor and homeless. Assistance is needed with the following:

Thanksgiving Baskets – Canned beans, canned fruit, canned tuna, canned green beans, pasta, cereal, fresh vegetables, coffee, cream and sugar are needed for 80 families. Donations accepted from 9 am to 8 pm until November 20 at 6153 Cahuenga Blvd., North Hollywood, CA 91606.

In addition, financial gifts to purchase the needed food can be earmarked ‘2011 SVdP Thanksgiving’ and sent to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul St. Patrick Conference at the above address.

Society's St. Madeleine Conference in Pomona

The Society of St. Vincent de Paul’s St. Madeleine Conference in Pomona is seeking the public's assistance with food donations and financial gifts for its Thanksgiving distribution to the local poor and homeless who have already signed up for the baskets. Assistance is needed with the following:

Thanksgiving Baskets – Canned food for 100 families. Donations accepted from 9 am to 4:30 pm until November 17.

Community Thanksgiving Meal – Rolls, Bread, Yams, Canned Vegetables, Gravy, Butter and Punch for 80 individuals. Donations accepted from 9 am to 4:30 pm, Monday through Friday, in the parish office (and) from 7:30 am to 5 pm on Sunday in the parish hall until November 22.

The Society of St. Vincent de Paul’s St. Brigid Conference in Los Angeles is seeking the public's assistance with food donations and financial gifts for its Thanksgiving distribution to the local poor and homeless. Assistance is needed with the following:

Thanksgiving Baskets – Gift cards from Ralphs or Food 4 Less and frozen turkeys for 200 families. Donations accepted from 10 am to 5 pm, Monday through Friday, until November 18.

Community Thanksgiving Day Meal – Frozen turkeys and hams, yams and all the fixings for 250 individuals. Donations accepted from 10 am to 5 pm, Monday through Friday, until November 22.

In addition, financial gifts to purchase the needed food can be earmarked ‘2011 SVdP Thanksgiving’ and sent to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul St. Brigid Conference, 5214 S. Western Ave., Los Angeles, CA 90062.
