This way to the Society's Thrift Store in Los Angeles
The Society of St. Vincent de Paul has a new billboard near its L.A. Store at the intersection of Broadway, Spring and 18th streets (across from Young Nak Church). with an arrow near the address pointing to the direction of the store, the goal is to help drive traffic at the Society's main store and keep St. Vincent de Paul's name in front of the driver's eyes.

The event allowed the Society thank the various sponsors and vendors that assisted in St. Vincent's first annual Hike for the Homeless earlier this year. Sheila Gilbert elected first SVdP female president in the USA
Joseph Flannigan, outgoing president of the National Council of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul USA, announces his successor...
I am pleased to announce that National Secretary Sheila Gilbert has been elected the 12th President of the National Council of the U.S. Society of St. Vincent de Paul. She will be officially commissioned at the closing liturgy of the National Meeting on September 4, 2011. President-Elect Gilbert will take office on October 1, 2011.

St. Vincent de Paul hosts Blood Drive on August 16; Gifts for Donors
Why be ordinary when you can be extraordinary and help save a life? And, who knows? The life you save could be a family member, a friend or even yourself one day.
The Society of St. Vincent de Paul will host a Blood Drive from 12-6 p.m. on Tuesday, August 16 at the Society’s store at 210 N. Avenue 21 in Los Angeles. Participants will not only have an opportunity to win FREE ‘Gas for a Year, but a donor will be selected randomly every day in August for a $50 gas gift card. In addition, blood donors will receive two complimentary VIP tickets to the Laugh Factory and a voucher for two Chivas USA soccer tickets. (Note – Identification is required to donate blood, and there is a $10 total processing fee for the Chivas tickets).

Did you know?
St. Vincent de Paul's impact has been felt throughout the world for generations. One shining example is DePaul University , a private institution of higher education and research in Chicago, Illinois. It was founded by the Vincentians in 1898, and is named after the Society's 17th century French priest, who valued philanthropy.
Vincentians are volunteers from all backgrounds of life who help improve the quality of life for thousands of individuals through various acts of charity during the year. Locally, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul's Council of Los Angeles has close to 2,000 Vincentians who serve the homeless and working poor in the counties of Los Angeles, Ventura and Santa Barbara.

SVdP sees time in the entertainment industry
The Society of St. Vincent de Paul on Saturday played a small part in what hopes to become a future television program. The Society benefited from some nice donations that will be sold in its thrift stores to help fund St. Vincent de Paul's local charitable services. This not only helps shoppers on fixed incomes, but the store revenue assists the Society's shelter program, its camp for children and daily emergency services.

Words of Society's founder still ring true today for SVdP's outreach
What sets the Society of St. Vincent de Paul a part from other charitable organizations is its home visits from the Society's close to 2,000 year-round 'Vincentian' volunteers in the counties of Los Angeles, Ventura and Santa Barbara. The word home doesn't always mean a residence, though. It sometimes means a car parked alongside a street, a person living in cardboard box under a bridge, etc.
The following are quotes from the Society's founder, Blessed Frédéric Ozanam (1813-1853), that still hold true today in St. Vincent de Paul's outreach to ALL people:
“Let us do without hesitation whatever good lies at our hands”.
“Yours must be a work of love, of kindness, you must give your time, your talents, yourselves”.
“We must do what is agreeable to God. We must do what Our Lord Jesus Christ did when preaching the Gospel. Let us go to the poor. Let us learn of Him”.
“Knowledge of the poor and needy is not gained by pouring over books or in discussions with politicians, but by visiting the slums where they live, sitting by the bedside of the dying, feeling the cold they feel and learning from their lips the causes of their woes”.
