Image
The Society of St. Vincent de Paul will be recruiting volunteers to help with its local charitable services at a Volunteer Fair from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. tomorrow, October 1, at the Society’s Thrift Store, 210 N. Avenue 21, Los Angeles, 90031. FREE snacks will be provided.

Volunteers are needed to help in a variety of areas at the Society’s thrift stores in Los Angeles, Long Beach and Oxnard. In addition, volunteer mentors are being sought for St. Vincent de Paul’s Cardinal Manning Center (shelter) in the Toy District of downtown L.A.

These individuals make a huge impact when it comes to improving the quality of life for thousands of children, women and men every year,” said David Fields, executive director of St. Vincent de Paul. “Our goal is to recruit additional volunteers who can help us continue that legacy of rebuilding lives.”

13th Annual Layette Project in Los Angeles is a Hit!

Image
In celebration of the Feast Day of St. Vincent de Paul on Tuesday, approximately 15'Vincentian' volunteers from the Society's Our Lady of Angels (OLA) District distributed layette packages to 50 newborns at California Hospital Medical Center.

New mothers were pleasantly surprised by the gifts and were appreciative of the kindness shown them and their newborns by people they had never met.

"Oh my gosh," said Alejandra Vasquez. "So cute. I was not expecting these things. I can use everything they gave me today. (The people from St. Vincent de Paul) were so nice. You can tell it came from their hearts."

The first six children born on or near St. Vincent de Paul's Feast Day were also presented strollers.

Originally founded by Vincentian Dorothy Campbell 13 years ago, the layette project is a favorite of OLA President Suzanne Mingleton.

"We've been planning for this since January. Not only did we hold fundraisers, but more of the Conferences …

A Letter from the Society's National President

Image
Dear Vincentians & Friends:

Today, September 27, we celebrate the Feast of St. Vincent de Paul, the patron of the Society. Before this day is done, please take a moment to reflect on our mission, and say a special prayer for the work we do as Vincentians as well as for those whom we serve.

As I end my last days as President of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, I want to thank all of you for your efforts to bring assistance and direction to the least among us. If I have come far, it is because you have chosen to make the journey with me.

Yours in St. Vincent and Blessed Frederic,

Lend Lease employees help brighten Cardinal Manning Center

Image
Eight employees from Lend Lease in downtown Los Angeles recently spent four hours painting the women/children's section of the Society's Cardinal Manning Center in the toy district of Skid Row.

According to Mike Concannon, senior vice president of Lend Lease in L.A., St. Vincent de Paul's shelter was chosen because "it is within our local community, our office is walking distance from Cardinal Manning and we wanted to make sure our efforts were felt locally."

Concannon indicated the employees enjoyed volunteering their time and helping others in need.

"We (at Lend Lease) know we are all very fortunate. To take time to get involved and give back is extremely important and gratifying."

The employee's participation was part of the company's 16th Annual Community Day in which more than 15,000 employees globally spent time giving back to charities and organizations in their local communities.

When asked about next year's Community Day, Concanno…

Image
The Society of St. Vincent de Paul’s Council of Los Angeles and the Catholic Schools Consortium awarded backpacks filled with school supplies on Monday to 24 elementary age students from eight inner city Catholic Schools in the Tom Bradley Tower of Los Angeles City Hall.

The event included a few words from Councilmember Ed Reyes of the First Council District, who hosted the event, and Councilmember Tom LaBonge of the Fourth Council District, and a special lunch for students, their parents and school administrators.

Councilmember Reyes spoke about his days as a boy and how similar they were to many of the young people in the room, while Councilmember LaBonge shared about the impact St. Vincent de Paul’s Circle V Ranch Camp had on him as a boy years earlier.

Prior to receiving their backpacks from St. Vincent de Paul President Claire Padama, school administrators briefly highlighted their student’s achievements in school and how deserving they were of this recognition, especially in a t…

Words to begin the week...

Image
As we begin a new week, consider these thought provoking words from the Society's patron saint, St. Vincent de Paul:

"Lord, help me to make time today to serve you in those who are most in need of encouragement or assistance."

"The poor have much to teach you. You have much to learn from them."

"The poor are your masters. You are the servant."

Challenge yourself to make a positive difference in at least one life this week and see how it changes you. Have a good week!

Feast Day of SVdP Founder Blessed Frédéric Ozanam

Image
The Society of St. Vincent de Paul celebrates the Feast Day of its founder, Blessed Frédéric Ozanam, on Friday. Enjoy this overview of the Society's founder.

As a 20 year-old law student in Paris, Frédéric Ozanam(1813-1853) and a few fellow law students founded the St. Vincent de Paul Society, which quickly grew throughout Europe and today is one of the largest charities in the world (with more than a million members on all continents). Later, as a lawyer and professor of commercial law and of literature at the University of Paris,

Ozanam was the first to conceptualize and elucidate the natural wage, drawing from Catholic Social Teaching, principally via St. Thomas Aquinas, regarding the common good. His work became an important platform for the first labor encyclical on the rights of workers, issued by Pope Leo XIII in 1891.

Ozanam was an exemplary Catholic scholar and eloquent public intellectual. He fearlessly championed workers’ rights, and his concept of the natural wage took r…

Spiritual insight from St. Vincent de Paul, Servant of the Poor

Image
"It is our duty to prefer the service of the poor to everything else and to offer such service as quickly as possible. If a needy person requires medicine or other help during prayer time, do whatever has to be done with peace of mind. Offer the deed to God as your prayer.... Charity is certainly greater than any rule. Moreover, all rules must lead to charity."

SAVE THE DATE: Black and White Dinner Dance in Oxnard

The Society of St. Vincent De Paul, Ventura Social Services Task Force and the City of Oxnard Commission on Homelessness invite the public to the 2nd Annual Black and White Dinner Dance Fundraiser on Saturday October 15th, 2011 at the Oxnard Performing Arts Center.

The evening will include dinner, live entertainment by Chico (Latin Pop), a silent and live auction. All proceeds will benefit the Winter Warming Shelter - managed by St. Vincent de Paul - in Ventura County.

The West Ventura County Winter Shelter is a safe haven that assists homeless individuals during the coldest months of the year. It was started in reaction to widely publicized reports of homeless men and women freezing to death on park benches and heating grates.

The shelter, which operates annually from December to March (6 pm to 6 am), provides transportation to the shelter site; intake, case-management and referral services; dinner; showers; cots or air mattresses; a light breakfast and transportation to a drop-off s…
