A Thanksgiving Day Prayer

Image
To all our wonderful 'Vincentian' volunteers, employees and donors, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, Council of Los Angeles says...HAPPY THANKSGIVING! We are thankful for all your support throughout the year! Enjoy this Thanksgiving prayer:

Dear Heavenly Father:

Please make us an instrument of your peace;
Where there is hatred, let us sow love;
Where there is injury, pardon;
Where there is doubt, faith;
Where there is despair, hope;
Where there is darkness, light;
And where there is sadness, joy. As we pray together today, let us remember that things don't happen over night.

Let us not forget the struggles we all are going thru in this movement for economic injustice. Even if frustration may set in; Let us not grow weary while doing good, for in due season we shall reap if we do not lose heart.

~ Amen

Words from St. Vincent de Paul

Image
"It is our duty to prefer the service of the poor to everything else and to offer such service as quickly as possible. If a needy person requires medicine or other help during prayer time, do whatever has to be done with peace of mind. Offer the deed to God as your prayer.... Charity is certainly greater than any rule. Moreover, all rules must lead to charity."

A Veteran's Day Prayer

Image
Not to us is the glory, O Lord! Not to us the glory. The nation we call "the land of the free and the home of the brave" has been your gift to us. If it depended upon our own abilities, we would no longer be free, and we often are not brave.

You know only too well the sins of our nation and our inherent weakness. You have looked into our hearts and seen the self-centeredness. You have seen the shame that blights our land because of the sin that taints the hearts of everyone.

Yet you have not forsaken us. You have protected us. There is a song about our nation that contains the words: "God shed his grace on thee." And this is the only reason for our safety and security. Your love, which we do not deserve, this is our strength. This is our only hope.

Continue to shield us with your faithful love. Continue to build up our faith in Jesus who has defeated the dominion of the devil and won the victory for us over death.

Lord, we thank and praise you for preserving and sust…

A Letter from SVdP's New National Development Director

Image
Hello:

I would like to introduce myself. I am the new National Director of Development, Steve Martinez. I am very excited about joining the National Staff and assisting in the development and management of the resources that are essential to the Society's mission.

It is the time of the year when we are preparing for our Annual Year-End Appeal. The mailing is scheduled to be mailed to the Society members and National office donors on November 11, 2010, about two weeks after the Ozanam Newsletter is delivered. The National appeal raises funds to support programs and services administered by the National office. The National Friends of the Poor® Walk, for example, continues to grow and provide local funding to assist those who lack basic human needs. This program alone has the potential to bring in millions of dollars to help our Conferences (groups of volunteers) aid to those in need. The National Friends of the Poor® Grant Program distributed $164,000 to Conferences in eight regions…

Today is All Souls Day

Image
Today, November 2, is All Souls Day, in which we recall our non-canonized ancestors in faith, pray for them, and ask for their prayers in turn.

In Mexico (and, increasingly, in Southern California), November 2 is also celebrated as Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead); families build home altars on which they place pictures of deceased loved ones and/or visit their loved ones at their place of internment. It is a time of year to recall that our loved ones who have passed away are not really gone, but awaiting us in God’s glory.

Why We Pray for the Dead

We say prayers, not only for those whom we knew and loved, but also for the "poor souls". Explain to your children about praying for the "poor souls" who may have no one else -- no families, no children or grand-children -- to pray for them. This is an act of charity that we can perform for them.

Be sure to mention that that respect for the dead is part of respect for all human life which comes from God. Our heavenly Fa…

November 1 - All Saints Day

Image
All Saints Day is solemnity celebrated on the first of November. It is instituted to honour all the saints, known and unknown, and, according to Urban IV, to supply any deficiencies in the faithful's celebration of saints' feasts during the year.

In the early days the Christians were accustomed to solemnize the anniversary of a martyr's death for Christ at the place of martyrdom. In the fourth century, neighbouring dioceses began to interchange feasts, to transfer relics, to divide them, and to join in a common feast; as is shown by the invitation of Saint Basil of Caesarea (397) to the bishops of the province of Pontus. Frequently groups of martyrs suffered on the same day, which naturally led to a joint commemoration. In the persecution of Diocletian the number of martyrs became so great that a separate day could not be assigned to each. But the Church, feeling that every martyr should be venerated, appointed a common day for all. The first trace of this we find in Antio…
