The Council's Our Lady of the Angels District will hold a special fundraiser at Harrah's Casino in San Diego on Thursday, August 12 to benefit its upcoming Layette Project for disadvantaged newborns.

All participants need not worry about driving the overcrowded freeways, as everyone will enjoy the trip on a comfortable, air-conditioned bus. Each passenger also will receive a FREE Buffet Lunch.

The bus will board at St. Brigid Church, 5214 S. Western Ave., L.A., 90062 and leave promptly at 8:30 a.m., returning by 6:30 p.m.

The cost is just $21 per person, which includes a tip for the bus driver.

If you are unable to attend, but would still like to donate your tax-deductible gift to help this year's Layette Project, please make your check payable to OLA Society of St. Vincent de Paul, and send it to the attention of Shirley Coburn at 2190 W. 31st Street, L.A., CA 90018-3490.

Pope Benedict XVI honors six Vincentians

Image
Congratulations are in order for six of our Vincentian volunteers for being named recipients of the Benemerenti Award.

This papal honor - accorded by Pope Benedict XVI for "serving with distinction" - is given to individuals in the Catholic church who have shown exemplary service to their church, family and community.

Our six Vincentians include:

* Remedios Baluyut, St. Bernard, Los Angeles;
* Joseph Coughlin, St. Bernard, Los Angeles;
* Ed Kunkler, Our Mother of Good Counsel, Los Angeles;
* Martin Loera, St. Frances of Rome, Azusa;
* Cecilia Ordonez, St. Raymond, Downey;
* Salvador Reyes, Holy Trinity, Los Angeles.

May God continue to bless each of you and the individuals you help on a daily basis!

One Act of Kindness Deserves Another

Image
Helping others is what St. Vincent de Paul is all about. And, it doesn't just have to occur on the job. Service to others is a daily experience that we all can participate in, regardless of your job.

For example:

Our fund developer, Grace Casian, stopped at a local In-N-Out Burger after work last night, placed her order in the drive-thru and waited her turn. Upon receiving her food, Grace was told that the individual in the car before her had already paid for her order!

Grace didn't know the individual, but was informed that it was a regular customer who always paid for the car behind her. Grace was taken back by this nice deed. In turn, she paid for the food in the car following her, saying that it felt really good to show this simple act of kindness.

Being kind to others is simple, and you never know how it will impact other lives. Regardless of the deed, take time today to be generous to others. You'll come away feeling blessed.

St. Vincent de Paul store celebrates 1st anniversary

Image
By Pamela Hale-Burns, Press-Telegram Staff Writer

LONG BEACH - It's been a tough economic year, but the Society of St. Vincent de Paul store survived and celebrated its first anniversary Tuesday.

"It's been doing very well. We got the store opened and it's a beautiful building," said Anthony Terrazas, director of store operations for the Society. "We're struggling a little bit because of the economy, with the donations coming in, but we're hanging in there, just like everybody else."

Community visibility is vital to their success, Terrazas said.

"Hopefully, in due time, our clientele will be coming into the store a lot more," he said. "Customer count is down right now, but we're working on that.

This month, the store celebrates customer appreciation month, with their prices cut in half, Terrazas said.

"In the month of July we're having everything in the store 50 percent off to try to enhance people coming to the store…

Thank you, Vincentians!

Last fiscal year, more than 2,000 'Vincentian' volunteers from the Society's L.A. Council donated 308,000 hours of their time and drove close to 763,000 miles in their personal vehicles - at their own expense - to make home visits and help improve the quality of life for thousands of children, women and men in need.

Close to 90 percent of the Council’s Vincentians are age 40 and older and of various ethnicities and national backgrounds, which proves to be essential in serving this region’s diverse population.

Thoughts from volunteers on why they assist the less fortunate:

“I volunteer because I believe in the need to assist others when we can. And it gives me an opportunity to use my work skills in the community. The (Conference) I work with tries to help others help themselves. This is very satisfying for me.”

~ Barbara, 54, Ojai

“Being a Vincentian allows me to help those in need. It helps me get out of myself, while putting my problems in proper perspective. I get to know…

Volunteers are the root of the Society's Outreach

Image
The Society’s more than 2,000 year-round ‘Vincentian’ volunteers helped close to 127,000 homeless, disadvantaged and working-poor families live a little easier during the past fiscal year. Assistance included, but was not limited to: rent, mortgage, utilities, medical, dental and legal issues regardless of religion, race, gender or national origin.

Bob, 68, a Vietnam veteran whose prostate cancer was in remission, faced eviction from his trailer. Receiving no social security benefits, Bob had exhausted his financial options. After much advocating on his behalf, a local St. Vincent de Paul ‘volunteer’ conference helped restore Bob’s social security benefits, established a bank account and moved him into a senior complex. Bob now volunteers his time sorting books at a St. Vincent de Paul thrift store, joyfully telling anyone who will listen how his life changed because the Society helped him when no one else would.

Did You Know?

The Society's Cardinal Manning Center (CMC) provides hope and shelter for 73 men, five women and seven children each night in downtown Los Angeles each night. Close to 111,000 individuals were served through the drop-in program last year, providing showers, a computer/reading room, groups for emotional support and help in moving from homelessness to self-reliance through on-site services. There was a 49% increase in families and 8% climb in men using these services from the previous year. This is just one of several programs that CMC offers to help the homeless get back on their feet.

Case:Upon becoming homeless, Janella and her youngest daughter, Raquel, 16, a high school student who also worked part-time, entered the Cardinal Manning Center. Initially, Janella did not endure herself to the program. She missed counseling appointments, lacked social and parental skills, accused other clients of outlandish behavior and had trouble saving money and budgeting. Following referrals and…

A picture is worth a thousand words

Show and tell...

Eye-catching artistry has been added to the walls of the Society's new lobby and administration office in Los Angeles. The goal? To further enhance St. Vincent de Paul's image and message about its vast outreach in this diverse section of the country.

The Society's lobby and office area is connected to its large thrift store, which is considered the 'Granddaddy of the L.A. Thrift Store Scene' by the Los Angeles Times.

The new art portrays the overall mission of the L.A. Council; a message that is very important to David Fields, the Council's new executive director. For those people who are only familiar with the Society's thrift store, this allows them to see the many facets that make up the L.A. Council. Next on the list? Photos of our local programs nicely placed on the walls of the new admin office.

Have a good weekend!

Praying for Parish Collaboration

Image
The Society's Los Angeles Council is praying for parish collaboration in the counties of Los Angeles, Ventura and Santa Barbara when it comes to its BUNDLE SUNDAY program.

Parish members can easily support the program by donating their discards of usable clothing, household goods and misc. small items - as well as rags and newspapers - when they attend Mass on a scheduled Bundle Sunday. *Please note that this collection is for small items only, and that a free pick-up of large donations (furniture, appliances & electronics) can be made by calling 323-224-6280 or 800-97-HELP-1.

Donations serve two purposes: First - They are given to families in extreme- need through the Society's free distribution program; Second - They are resold in St. Vincent de Paul's thrift stores to help fund the Society's outreach programs. In either case, YOU are helping the less-fortunate and improving the local economy!

A Note from the Society's National Office

Dear SVDP Members:

It is our pleasure to announce the new Vincentian Youth and Young Adult website: www.svdpusa.net/youth.

This website will help to keep you current on the groups and the activities of young people who are engaged in the works of the Society. It will give you ideas on ways to engage young people in your own conferences. As our Rule states: "Young members keep the Society young ... The senior members assume the responsibility of assisting them along their path of training, respecting their personal choices and their aspirations of Vincentian service." (Rule 3.7)

Thank you for your encouragement and support.
