Various Ways To Observe Memorial Day

Image
Memorial Day reminds us of our duties towards the wounded soldiers and the bereaved families, orphans and widows of the dead soldiers. We should honor the dead by adorning their sacred remains with flowers and garlands and show our gratitude towards them in the following ways:

* Adorning the graves of the soldiers with flags or flowers.
* Visiting cemeteries and memorials.
* Furling the American Flag at half-mast until noon.
* Furling the 'POW/MIA Flag'.
* Keep silence for a minute at 3 p.m., 'National Moment of Remembrance' and listen to Taps being played.
* Take a pledge to aid the disabled veterans, widows, widowers and orphans of the dead and keep it.
* You may support the efforts to restore the traditional day of observance of Memorial Day back to May 30th.
* Offering thanks to the veterans and appreciating the ultimate sacrifices of the soldiers to the bereaved families personally may help too.

SVdP Founder Frederic Ozanam - A Man Ahead of His Times

Image
As a 20 year-old law student in Paris, Frederic Ozanam (1813-1853) and a few fellow law students founded the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, which quickly grew throughout Europe and today is one of the largest charities in the world (with more than a million members on all continents). Later, as a lawyer and professor of commercial law and of literature at the University of Paris,

Ozanam was the first to conceptualize and elucidate the natural wage, drawing from Catholic Social Teaching, principally via St. Thomas Aquinas, regarding the common good. Image
As big as the Society's 3rd Annual Camper by Camper was this past Saturday, it takes an Army of volunteers to make it become reality. The Council of Los Angeles THANKS the many individuals who gave of themselves so that at-risk boys and girls would be able to attend Circle V Ranch Camp this summer.

Some of the volunteers - who supported the evening handling various tasks - included young people from Immaculate Heart H.S./LA; Pasadena H.S./Pasadena; West Covina H.S./West Covina; Sacred Heart Church/Pomona; Our Mother of Good Counsel Conference/Los Feliz; and UCLA-Frassati Conference at the UCC/Westwood.

Here, they pose for a photo with honorees Pauley Perrette and Dr. Don Thomas, as well as Council Executive Director David Fields and Camp Director Ray López (l-r in back row). Manuel A. Sánchez, the Council's youth/young adult conference coordinator, also is in the back row, far right.
