Young people help paint L.A. shelter

Rain fell as young people gathered in preparation for their pilgrimage. By the time they reached their destination, the sun broke through clouds over the streets of downtown Los Angeles’ Skid Row.

Forty-two young 'Vincentian' volunteers braved the early morning rain last Saturday to participate in the Society of St. Vincent de Paul’s 10th Annual Paint Project at the Society’s homeless shelter, St. Vincent’s Cardinal Manning Center. Among those who ventured downtown were members of Mary Immaculate Youth Conference in Pacoima, UCLA-Frassati Conference in Westwood, St. Bernard Youth Conference in Glassell Park and members of the Vincentian Service Corps.

The young volunteers – ranging in age from 15 to 35 years, not including chaperones – painted the main drop-in area of the Cardinal Manning Center.

“This has a huge impact on them,” said Javier Hinojosa, Mary Immaculate Parish youth minister and spiritual advisor to its youth Conference. “And they’ve been looking forward to it.”

Those interested in future Society youth and young adult projects – including starting a young Vincentian “Conference” (i.e. volunteer group) at their parish or school, may contact Manuel A. Sánchez, youth/young adult Conference coordinator, at 323/226-1757, or via e-mail sanman@svdpla.org.

Seeking something special to do on Valentine's Day? Why not take in a musical, with proceeds benefiting local deserving children and families.

Help SVdP's continuing recovery efforts in Haiti!

video

Dear Vincentians & Friends:

As you know, Haiti suffered a series of catastrophic earthquakes and aftershocks that have changed that country forever. The loss of life and injuries has affected every person in that country. Whole families have been lost. The Archbishop and a large number of religious have lost their lives.

The Society of St. Vincent de Paul has a presence on the island in the form of a National Council in Port au Prince, four District Councils (two in the South and two in the North) and more than 25 Conferences (groups of volunteers). This country was the poorest in our hemisphere prior to the earthquakes. We have heard that the National (Council) is okay; we are still waiting word on the others.

We began within hours to raise funds for the Haiti Relief efforts. As you know, we are not first-responders. The number of first-responders there at present is extreme. The conditions on the ground are also extreme.

Eduardo Marques Almeida, the Society's International Vice President for the North Equatorial Zone who is responsible for Haiti, was in Port au Prince when the first earthquake hit. We have confirmed that he is okay. He works for the World Bank in Haiti and we know that he is working on the ground to move the relief effort forward.

The infrastructure involving roads, transportation, communication, medical, water and sanitation are destroyed. People are moving out of Port au Prince into the countryside. Neither location is equipped to deal effectively with this.

The National Board - at the meeting in St. Louis this past weekend - discussed exploring with the International Council General of the Society the need to focus on critical Systemic Change Projects as we go forward to insure that life will really be improved for those in need after the first-responders have gone home.

At this point your prayers and your contributions, both individually and as Conferences and Councils, are what is needed. In Southern California, financial gifts, earmarked 'Haiti Earthquake Help,' can be mailed to the Society's Los Angeles Council at 210 N. Avenue 21, L.A., CA 90031. We will keep you updated as news is made available.

Thanks and God Bless,

Roger Playwin

Calling all Youth!

Dear Young Vincentians & Friends,

This Saturday, February 6, the 10th Annual Paint Project LA will be held at St. Vincent de Paul's homeless shelter - Cardinal Manning Center.

In observance of the "Souper Bowl of Caring" Collection’s National Service Blitz, the Society is hosting the 10th Annual Paint Project L.A. at the Society’s Cardinal Manning Center in downtown Los Angeles’ Skid Row. Come and join with other young Vincentians from across Southern California as we gather to paint, clean and otherwise help out at the Society’s homeless shelter.

On Sunday, February 7, 2010 – "Souper Bowl of Caring" collection at your parish

That time of year is fast approaching – time for the annual "Souper Bowl of Caring." That’s right, Souper Bowl. Every year, on Super Bowl Sunday, youth groups of every denomination across the country stand at the exits of their churches with soup bowls or other containers and ask their parishioners for a $1 donation. That's less than a cup of coffee and less than many newspapers.

As always, we ask those who participate to donate their proceeds to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul Conference at their parish – or, if the youth have their own youth Conference, to keep all or part of the proceeds for their own service projects (and they are, of course, free to share part of the proceeds with their adult counterpart). This year, if your youth group wishes, they may designate any portion of the proceeds gathered for the relief efforts for the Haiti earthquake. We ask, as always, that the money be sent to the Society’s Council of Los Angeles office at 210 N. Avenue 21, L.A., CA 90031, along with a note stating that the money is intended for Haiti.

If you have any questions, feel free to call 323-224-6298.

Thanks again for all you do,

Manuel A. Sánchez
