Handmade blankets distributed at local rest home

Image
In the spirit of the Christmas season, approximately 175 handmade blankets of various colors were distributed on Tuesday to seniors at Alexandria Care Center in Los Angeles by volunteers of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul's Our Mother of Good Counsel Conference.

Led by Conference President Jerry Sullivan and L.A. Council President Claire Padama, members of OMGC walked through the large rest home, greeting and distributing the blankets to the patients.

"To see the smiles on their faces meant the world to us," said Jerry. "The men and women we visited seemed to appreciate the gifts and the fact that people would take time to say hello and ask how they were doing."

The Society's L.A. Council is planning February as "Taking Our Love to Our Seniors" month in which St. Vincent de Paul's volunteers will visit nursing homes throughout the counties of L.A., Ventura and Santa Barbara.

New Changes Continue for Your New Look SVdP Store in Los Angeles

Image
The Society's Los Angeles store remodeling project continues at 210 N. Avenue 21 near Dodger Stadium.

Besides the exterior photos seen on yesterday's blog, changes are occurring inside the store, too. By the first of the year, you'll see a new cash register system in place that will make it easier and faster for customers when purchasing St. Vincent de Paul's low-priced items. In addition, a new large display window in the front of the store is being built to help create a more modern and sophisticated look.

Presently, turnstiles have been installed at the store entrance, while a new exit has been built near the entrance, making the flow of foot traffic easier for customers arriving and leaving the store. Here are some current photos of the work in progress. Please know that the store is open during regular business hours.

Michael Thio, 66, has just started his six-year term as the 15th president general of the International Confederation of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul (SSVP). Elected by a margin of 87 percent votes on May 28, 2010 at the General Plenary Assembly in Salamanca, Spain, the Singaporean is the first Asian and non-European to head the worldwide lay Catholic apostolic society since it was formed in 1833 in France. Thio took up office officially on Sept. 27, the feast day of Saint Vincent de Paul.

Thio has been involved in the SSVP since 1967, first in Singapore, then at the Asia and global levels.

He recently spoke with ucanews.com in Melaka, Malaysia, where he was attending a national SSVP event there.

ucanews.com: What does it means to be the first Asian president general of SSVP?

MICHAEL THIO: After 177 years since it’s founding, the global movement in 146 countries voted for the first non-European president general. It is unprecedented and it is a hist…
