Frédéric Ozanam: St. Vincent de Paul's founder was wise beyond his years

Image
Frédéric Ozanam, founder of the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul, an association of charity that has spread throughout the world, lived in fidelity to God's grace as a Catholic layman. He was a loving husband and devoted father, a distinguished writer and a man who actively practiced the works of mercy.

The Society of St. Vincent de Paul began in the spring of 1833, when Ozanam and several Catholic student friends began meeting regularly for prayer, debate, and discussion at the home of Emmanuel Joseph Bailly, a forty-year-old Catholic owner of a print shop and publisher of a newspaper. They initially called their group “The Conference of History and Literature.” They also agreed to contribute to a fund, which they would then personally distribute directly to poor people in Paris. By the following May, the Society had become so popular among the Catholic students at the University of Paris that Bailly’s home could no longer accommodate all of the members at their meetings.

In May…

Quote of the Day: St. Vincent de Paul

Image
"To rely on our talents is a cause of great loss. When someone places confidence in his own prudence, knowledge, and intelligence, God, to make him know and see his insufficiency, withdraws from him His help and leaves him to work by himself. This is often why our undertakings miserably fail."

~ St Vincent de Paul

Young 'Vincentian' Volunteers Venture to Skid Row for Weekend Urban Plunge

Image
“This was but a taste – and a poor one at that – of what some people go through on a daily basis,” said Javier Hinojosa to several teens from Pacoima who spent a night at St. Vincent’s Cardinal Manning Center, a homeless shelter run by the Society of St. Vincent de Paul in downtown Los Angeles’ Skid Row.

“I heard people complaining about having to sleep on air mattresses, but you still clung to your sheets when it was time to get up. I heard some of you complaining about having to get up so early, but remember: People down here – those who’re lucky enough to get a bed in a shelter – have to get up at 5 a.m. every day, have to be back out on the street by five every morning.”

Hinojosa, spiritual advisor of the Society’s Mary Immaculate Youth Conference in Pacoima, and the teens then shared about their impressions of life on Skid Row.

“The teens were here as part of an ‘urban plunge,’” said Manuel Sánchez, youth & young adult conference coordinator for the Society and leader of the wee…

Happy Easter everyone!

Image
As we celebrate this special weekend, let us remember the true meaning of Easter. Happy Easter everyone!

After the Sabbath, at dawn on the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to look at the tomb. There was a violent earthquake, for an angel of the Lord came down from heaven and, going to the tomb, rolled back the stone and sat on it. His appearance was like lightning, and his clothes were white as snow. The guards were so afraid of him that they shook and became like dead men.

The angel said to the women, "Do not be afraid, for I know that you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified. He is not here; he has risen, just as he said. Come and see the place where he lay. Then go quickly and tell his disciples: 'He has risen from the dead and is going ahead of you into Galilee. There you will see him.' Now I have told you."

So the women hurried away from the tomb, afraid yet filled with joy, and ran to tell his disciples. Suddenly Jesus met them. …
