The Society of St. Vincent de Paul's Council of Los Angeles thanks 'A Foundation For Kids' for its recent donation of more than $50,000 in computer-related items for children and teenagers. The donations, which include Crammers and Fly Fusion pens, will benefit disadvantaged boys and girls this Christmas through the Society's various outreach programs.

Society's St. Bernard Conference helps record turnout at Christmas distribution

Image
The bad economy resulted in the largest Christmas distribution ever for the Society's St. Bernard Conference last Saturday, as the line of people was visible far down the residential block.

Close to 200 families turned out on a beautiful weekend afternoon to pick up grocery vouchers and new wrapped toys so that they could experience a blessed Christmas meal and smiles on the children's faces on December 25.

Besides the gifts, children also got to select an extra toy from the long line of unwrapped gifts on tables in the room, and visit with Santa Claus, whose elf was also passing out gifts.

Upon leaving the building, each child and adult enjoyed a free hot dog, nachos and beverage before heading home for the afternoon.

"This is the most we've helped at Christmas. It just shows you that times are still rough for many people in our community. I pray that our assistance will help make Christmas a little brighter for the children and families who don't have much this year…

St. Madeleine Conference brings joy & relief to families in need

Image
This Christmas, many families in "one of the poorest sections of Pomona" sought assistance because "the head of the household lost his/her job (or) had to choose between taking less hours at work or losing his/her job completely," according to the Dorothy Pinedo, president of the Society's St. Madeleine Conference.

It was for that reason that Pinedo's conference helped 100 families with Christmas food and toys late last week.

Despite the anguish seen on the faces of the parents who stood in line, they also appeared grateful and somewhat relieved when they left, knowing that their children would have toys and food on Christmas Day.

"It is really tough for many families in this area. We see it firsthand every week. I thank God that He has helped us provide what we could to make Christmas a little more joyful for those in need," Pinedo said.

Pinedo thanks all her 'Vincentian' volunteers and donors who helped make this event a successful one. Spe…

Santa Claus visits St. Vincent de Paul's L.A. Store

Image
They came. They saw. They gave their requests. And, they left with toys and smiles on their faces!

Santa Claus visited the Society's L.A. store last Saturday and passed out free gifts, bags of food and candy canes to children who had their photos taken with the man dressed in red. Even the young-at-heart stopped for a photo with St. Nick, as they temporarily relived their childhood dreams.

Many children couldn't contain their excitement, especially when Santa first arrived and walked through the store ringing a bell to announce his arrival. St. Nick then spent several hours visiting boys and girls, while Christmas music blared in the background.

Upon leaving St. Vincent de Paul's store, Santa was reportedly seen jumping in a sleigh and flying away with some reindeer leading the way.

Photos (top to bottom): Santa Claus says hello to a young child upon his arrival to the store; This young girl enjoys her visit with St. Nick; Even the young-at-heart take a moment to have a photo…

St. Elizabeth's young people help bring Christmas joy to homeless shelter on Skid Row

Image
For the 13th consecutive year, students and alumni from St. Elizabeth School in Altadena recently helped spread Christmas joy to the homeless by decorating the Society's Cardinal Manning Center in Los Angeles' Skid Row.

During their two-hour stay at the Council's shelter, close to 10 children (plus three chaperons) - led by 'Vincentian' volunteer Aimee Brazeau - decorated three Christmas trees, the main lobby area and the family section on the first floor to help brighten the mood for the children, women and men at the center.

Serving as a chaperon for the fourth straight year, Brazeau helped bring some joy to a little boy at the shelter by allowing him to help decorate a wreath. This child also helped supervise where some ornaments should go on the Christmas tree in the family section.

"It's just a really neat experience. I get so frustrated going to the stores with the crowds and that's not what the holiday is about. It's about seeing the smiles …

Thousands brave cold and rain in bad economy to receive Christmas toys and food

Image
Despite the chilly weather and overnight rain, families patiently waited in line. The first family had arrived at 7:30 p.m. last Friday. Throughout the night, individuals descended upon an area that wouldn't come alive until 8 a.m. the following morning.

When the time finally arrived, thousands of children, women and men were ready for the big moment. This wasn't a concert or a sporting event. It was the 1st Annual Bernadine Murray Angel City Christmas at the Expo Center near the Los Angeles Coliseum, where new toys and food were being distributed to Southern Californians still hurting from today's difficult economy.

The Society of St. Vincent de Paul's Council of L.A. and the City of L.A. co-sponsored the massive distribution that helped 4,500 individuals. Other local groups and businesses also helped contribute to the event.

A single father with four young children (ages 4-7), who had braved the weather since 2:30 a.m., was one of the beneficiaries. 'Stan,' who…

Summer will be here before you know it!

It's almost Christmas and the weather is chilly, even by Southern California standards. However, as the song from Annie reads, 'the sun will come out tomorrow,' especially in this region of the country.

Just envision the warmth of the sun and children laughing during the summer. It's not too early to start thinking about the Society's Circle V Ranch Camp near beautiful Santa Barbara and how YOU can help send a child to camp!

Tax-deductible financial gifts are welcomed to help provide camp scholarships for 98% of the 1,200 boys and girls who will be attending camp in July and August. For many of these young people, this will be the only vacation they'll enjoy during their summer break.

The cost per child per week, which includes lodging, swimming, hiking, arts & crafts, drama, field trips, three meals a day and MUCH more, is $325. Your donation in any amount is greatly appreciated, as YOU will help make a positive difference in a young person's life.
