St. Vincent de Paul Thrift Store to Open in Long Beach on Monday, June 1

The Society of St. Vincent de Paul's local expansion continues when the doors of its new LONG BEACH Thrift Store will open to the public at 9 a.m. on Monday, June 1.

The store, located at 2750 Pacific Coast Highway (former site of Al Greenwood's Bedspread Kingdom), will be stocked with nice and affordable furniture, appliances, electronics, clothing, bric-a-brac and more.

As the economic downturn continues, the Society's store is a welcomed sight for shoppers seeking needed everyday items at bargain prices. Store revenue also will benefit the Society's various local outreach programs to help improve the quality of life for individuals and families in extreme-need.

Directions to the new store can be found by visiting http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=2750+E+Pacific+Coast+Hwy,+Long+Beach,+CA+90804&sll=37.509726,-95.712891&sspn=29.064218,56.601563&ie=UTF8&ll=33.791292,-118.159418&spn=0.007472,0.013819&z=16&iwloc=A

Thank you, Success Valley Produce, LLC

The L.A. Council would like to thank Success Valley Produce, LLC, in Oxnard for its generous donation of $3,000 to help send local children to its Circle V Ranch Camp this summer. With the economic downturn, various funding sources to help send young people to camp have disappeared. Tax-deductible financial gifts like that from Success Valley Produce, LLC will continue to help send boys and girls, ages 7-13, to summer camp this year!

In fact, for MANY young people, attending Circle V Ranch Camp is the ONLY vacation they'll enjoy in 2009. For more information on how you, your organization or business can help send children to camp, please call 323-224-6213.

Pray for the L.A. Council during these challenging days

As the times become more difficult, please keep the L.A. Council in your prayers: prayers for our 'Vincentian' volunteers and the tireless work they provide to disadvantaged and homeless children and families throughout the year and prayers to help bring additional donors to the Council to help further the Society's goal in improving the quality of life for the underserved.

The time is getting closer.......

June is the anticipated month for the opening of the Council's new thrift store in Long Beach. A setback in the remodeling process postponed the original opening date earlier this year. However, with completion in sight, the store is being set up with clothes, bric-a-brac, electronics, furniture and more. More news in the coming days.

Memorial Day - 2009

As we turn our thoughts to Memorial Day, we remember those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom and we pray for the men and women who currently stand in the gap for our protection:

Dear Heavenly Father:

As we remember those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom, we think of how they have followed in the footsteps of your son, our Savior, Jesus Christ. Please hold our service men and women in your strong arms. Cover them with your sheltering grace and presence as they stand in the gap for our protection.

We also remember the families of our troops, and ask for your unique blessings to fill their homes and your peace, provision and strength to fill their lives.

May the members of our armed forces be filled with courage to face each day and may they trust in the Lord's mighty power to accomplish each task. Let our military brothers and sisters feel our love and support.

In the name of Jesus. Amen.

A Prayer in Difficult Financial Times

Lord, these are trying times for all of us.
It’s hard enough to wake up everyday
To go to work and when payday comes
To settle all the bills on time.
Everything seems to be caving in on me.
So many obligations to meet!
Lord, how do I cope with all these?
Give me Your gift of perseverance
That I may continue this journey of trials.
Give me Your wisdom
To use my meager wealth responsibly
Help me understand
When You knock me down to my knees
It is from here I should rise again.
Amen.

Bible inspiration : Luke 12:29-30
It is not for you to be in search of what you are to eat or drink. Stop worrying. Your Father knows you need such things.

A Prayer for Strength

O Lord,
In this time of need, strengthen me.
You are my strength and my shield;
You are my refuge and strength, a
very present help in trouble. I know,
Father, that Your eyes go to and fro
throughout the earth to strengthen
those whose hearts long for You. The
body grows weary, but my hope is in
You to renew my strength. I do not
fear, for You are with me. I am not
dismayed or overwhelmed, for You are
my God. I know You will strengthen me
and help me; that You will uphold me
with Your righteous hand. Even as the
shadows of illness cover me, I feel
the comfort of Your strength, Or Lord.
Amen.

Living Within Your Income

~ By Rick Warren

"Those who love money will never have enough. How meaningless to think that wealth brings true happiness! The more you have, the more people come to help you spend it. So what good is wealth—except perhaps to watch it slip through your fingers!" (Ecclesiastes 5:10-11 NLT)

When you spend more than you earn, you end up in tremendous stress. The Bible says, "Stupid people spend their money as fast as they get it" (Proverbs 21:20 TEV).

What motivates us to live beyond our means? Why do we spend ourselves into debt? Why are we rarely satisfied with what we have?

There are three myths that drive us into debt:

MYTH: Having more things will make me happier.

FACT: "Those who love money will never have enough. How meaningless to think that wealth brings true happiness!...So what good is wealth—except perhaps to watch it slip through your fingers!" (Ecclesiastes 5:10-11 NLT)

MYTH: Having more things will make me more important.

FACT: "Watch out and guard yourselves from every kind of greed; because your true life is not made up of the things you own, no matter how rich you may be" (Luke 12:15 TEV).

MYTH: Having more things will make me more secure.

FACT: "The Lord is like a strong tower, where the righteous can go and be safe. Rich people, however, imagine that their wealth protects them like high, strong walls around a city" (Proverbs 18:10-11 TEV).

When we buy into these myths, we always overspend. So, here's how to enjoy life more on less:

• Find happiness in helping others. Jesus said, "There is more happiness in giving than in receiving" (Acts 20:35 TEV). Just look around you and you'll see this is true. The happiest people are those who help the most, not those who have the most. Misers are always miserable.

• Find self-worth by getting to know God. God says, "...you are precious to me..." (Isaiah 43:4 TEV). You matter to God. He made you for a purpose. Genuine self-esteem comes from establishing a relationship with God and becoming all he meant for you to be.

• Find security in trusting God, not a bank balance. The Bible says, "Keep your lives free from the love of money, and be satisfied with what you have. For God has said, 'I will never leave you; I will never abandon you'" (Hebrews 13:5 TEV). Real security must be found in something that can never be taken from you. While there are many ways to lose your possessions, Jesus said God will take care of you if you trust Him.

The Serenity Prayer

God grant me the serenity
to accept the things I cannot change;
courage to change the things I can;
and wisdom to know the difference.

Living one day at a time;
Enjoying one moment at a time;
Accepting hardships as the pathway to peace;
Taking, as He did, this sinful world
as it is, not as I would have it;
Trusting that He will make all things right
if I surrender to His Will;
That I may be reasonably happy in this life
and supremely happy with Him
Forever in the next.
Amen.

Expanding for the Future

Expansion for the future continues at the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, Council of Los Angeles. The Council's new offices are almost ready, as the drywall is up, the electricity is on and the new computer and telephone lines are being installed (right photo). Meanwhile, because the office expansion eliminates one thrift store entrance, a new entrance into the store is being prepared, as seen in this other photo. The new entrance will be off Humboldt Street.
